Genre fans, rejoice! Joss Whedon has finally directed for the big screen and he’s bringing some of his TV pals along with him. His television series Firefly was cancelled before it’s time by the FOX network and now the company that’s owns NBC, Universal Studios, is continuing the adventures of Captain Mal Reynolds and his band of outlaws in the movie, Serenity.

Whedon has all the elements that made his television works great, such as hot asskicking females, humor with a sly wink and well thought...

Great interview...good job on covering so many topics with him!

I thought the film was fantastic. I just don't know what kind of appeal it will have to people not familiar with the series - hopefully lots! Here in the UK it has been getting a fair bit of advertising. I think there was even a tv spot during the Man Utd Champions League game during the week...which must have cost a quid or two.

Personally, I'd rather see Firefly the tv series resurrected after this film. That's purely because we'd get more of it, more often than with a film franchise. But Whedon has already said that they're signed on for two more movies - successful box office permitting - after this one.

Eee. There's talk of a Spike-Illyria movie. If anyone is as much of a Buffy-verse freak as I am, they'll know who I'm talking about. Shoulda thrown a question concerning THAT in there biggrin

I read on Whedonesque that he had asked Tim Minear to do the Spike thing. Looks like Whedon is going to be working flat out on other projects for a while. I guess it's better that he passes it off to someone he trusts rather than have it sit on the shelf until he has time to do it himself.

The well thought out script part is what gets me. Otherwise, this would be total shite like 90% of what came out last season. Well, every season really. Good interview.

I noticed in this interview like in a lot of others that questions of Buffy/Angel/earlier work is referred to as "your previous stuff." In fact, DRE is the first I've seen that has actually muttered the name "Buffy." I was just wondering if there is a taboo on the subject, like Tim Curry and Rocky Horror Picture Show. It also makes me wonder if Joss is unfeeling towards his oldest children (like the way Sarah Michelle Gellar has forgotten what it was that made her famous, though I don't think Whedon is that much prima donna). I really wonder since I've yet to hear Joss discuss the rumblings about expanding the Slayer universe other than comics.

I've feared the dying rasps of inspiration I've seen from Hollywood for many years now. As actors go, I feel there is still hope in Johnny Depp and Gary Oldman; directors like Robert Rodriguez are artists yet unjaded by money hungry benefactors. If Joss is taking his amazing writing skills to the Big Time (I'll hold my thoughts of his direction until after I see the movie) then ol' Hollywood may be entering another golden era.

He was quite polite in his answering of the "what do you think of SG" question, I thought. I'd heard he was pretty down with the second-wave anti-porn feminists in that respect.

I'm gonna go check out Serenity next week.

The rumours are that there's going to be a set of three TV movies based on Spike, Illyria, and Willow, on the WB. At the moment he's putting all the cast and crew in place, because he doesn't want to make any announcements without it being definate first. That's a good thing, because I remember not too long ago when there were new rumours of a Spike movie leaking every week for about 3 months, but never any confirmation.

That would have to be done in the off season as James and Aly are both working and before he starts on Goners and Wonder Woman. But that would be cool

Though I have decided after seeing the movie there is only one Special Feature I want for the DVD above all others. (as geeky as it may be) I want a FireFly Sound option.. one where sound in space is taken out but the score is left in..

Movie was really really good though

I wish Firefly/Serenity had been more succesful. The movie is really quite good.

I hope that someday they'll get around to making those Buffy straight to DVD movies.

Too bad he's off Wonder Woman. I was looking forward to that.
