I posted this in the film group, but thought I'd throw this out here...

Anybody have any recommendations for War films? I'm more interested in more recent war films: anything as far back as 1990. If there were any noteworthy films made around that time, then I'd love to hear about it.

However, if everything in your opinion from that time sucked, then by all means, list as far back as you want (like, "Bridge On The River Quai"). Anyways, thanks in advance, all wink

Blackhawk Down was really good IMHO. Three Kings was an interesting twist on a war flick. Saving Private Ryan is a good one for historical accuracy meets THX.

If you want "deeper" films try something like The Thin Red Line.

However, its not a movie but you should check out that tv show Over There. Good stuff and its about the current militay actions.

Band of Brothers was a good show too, and I think it still comes on the History channel every so often.

I liked Glory a lot. The Great Escape is also one of my top choices. Cold Mountain wasn't too bad either. I'm not sure it counts but I'd throw in Starship Troopers.

Yeah, I'd be willing to count sci-fi as well, so long as I can find the allegory in it...so keep 'em comin', all wink

Braveheart of course. And there was a low budget one a few years back called Sniper. It has a few shitty sequels, but the first was pretty ok. Grave of the Fireflies is just depressing despite its' quality.

You might try Stalingrad. It's a German film from 1994 and, as you might guess, a pretty bleak one.

Also, there was a great little indie film from 1990 called A Midnight Clear. It's based on a good book by Will Wharton.

A group of recruits, before heading off to vietnam, going to infantry training down in the Louisiana swamplands, known as "Tigerland", really good acting, pretty much put Colin Farrell on the map. And love him or hate him, he's actually very good in this

Hamburger Hill and Das Boot (the director's cut, not the shitty English dubbed version) deserve mentions.

I'm no war film enthusiast, but I must say I really enjoyed U-571 (Harvey Keitel cancels out Jon Bon Jovi) and [i\Enemy at the Gates (anything with Ron Perlman is worth a look at least once).

Also, I would recommend three very powerful books:
Last Letters Him: Voices of Americans from the Battlefields of Iraq from Life/HBO/NY Times (there's also a DVD)
Shrapnel in the Heart: Letters and Remembrances from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial compiled by Laura Palmer
The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien
