I'm lost
January 2003

Dear Big Pharmaceutical Company,

As someone who gets ear infections easily, I'm distressed about my treatment including forced sobriety. I haven't had a drink in nearly six days now and I've still got three or four miserably sober days to go.

So please please PLEASE make an antibiotic that plays well with alcohol. Even better, make antibiotic whiskey.

Thanks!

A.

I didn't think people actually paid attention to the "no drinking while taking this medication" rule

I do if it means the world will sound normal faster.

Last time I got a nasty random ear-and-throat infection, they gave me some magical three-day antibiotic, where I just had to take one pill a day. I started feeling better in hours, seriously.

I can't remember what it was called. I think it started with a Z.

This post has been of no help, sorry.

If that is the one they call the "z-pack" then yes, that stuff works fast and kicks an infection's ass.

It's Zithromax (Azithromycin) in one of those nifty little Zpaks. It said on some informational web site that one should "avoid alcohol" "exposure to the sun" while on it. I got that second part licked easy. It's the first part that hurts.

I just found a drug interaction site by the FDA that doesn't list any interaction between azithromycin and alcohol. Hmm....

Even if there's no direct drug interaction, alchol depresses your immune system and thins your blood, making it harder for the antibiotic to work properly.

Do a shot. If you don't die right away do another. Lather, rinse, repeat.

I hear bong hits increase the effect of antibiotics.

I remember hearing you shouldn't drink milk or eat cheese when on antibiotics because the antibiotics shoot their wad eating up the bacteria in the milk.

Here's another link:

do alcohol and antibiotic mix?

I feel as much sympathy for someone who can't go without alcohol for this long as I do for people that bitch about not being able to light up on long flights.

As a former pothead after a while you begin to believe that bong hits increase the effectiveness of everything

If you're buying milk at a grocery store in the developed world, it's been pasteurized. Or even Ultra-pasteurized. This kills bacteria, dead, although it's free to grow again once the milk has been opened and contaminated by you... Though I wouldn't expect that to be much worse than anything else in your fridge.

Raw vs. pasteurized milk is a topic for another thread.
