From the "I swear to God I'm not making this up" file:

An Australian man built up a 40,000-volt charge of static electricity in his clothes as he walked, leaving a trail of scorched carpet and molten plastic and forcing firefighters to evacuate a building.

Frank Clewer, who was wearing a woolen shirt and a synthetic nylon jacket, was oblivious to the growing electrical current that was building up as his clothes rubbed together.

When he walked into a building in the country town of Warrnambool in the southern state of Victoria Thursday, the electrical charge ignited the carpet.

"It sounded almost like a firecracker," Clewer told Australian radio Friday.

"Within about five minutes, the carpet started to erupt."

The full story can be found here. Here's what I want to know- where can I find a sweater and jacket like that? I smell a visit to my old office in the near future.

I've always thought that we could solve our nation's energy and obesity problem in one go by putting fat people in shag-rug jumpers and making them run in giant hamster wheels.

Hang a cheeseburger on a string on front of them. If they lose enough weight to catch it, it's theirs and they can stop.

I'm sure the US military has already read this article. It goes without saying that there's a secret test location in the Nevada desert that currently has young cadets dressed in woolen shirts and nylon jackets making menacing rubbing gestures at card board cut outs of jihadies.

And consequently screw up the Economist's Big Mac Index, which in turn would screw up one of the more reliable metrics for currency evaluation.

This article has given me an idea...

Part 1 of plan: While most fabric softeners will help reduce static cling, I would instead like to make one that would increase the amount of static in a garment.

Part 2: Visit a large apartment building with about 30+ units. Then locate the laundry facilities which are usually found in the basement.

part 3: Wait as each tenant goes to use the dryer. Then when they are not looking, switch their normal brand of fabric softener with our super improved static inducing brand of fabric softener. Best time for this is usually early Saturday and Sunday afternoons when everyone is off of work.

part 4: sit back and enjoy the show...bring marshmallows. Should provide about a weeks worth of entertainment and wacky news articles on sites like SG. smile

Why did it take the carpet 5 minutes to catch on fire? The discharge would've be instantaneous. And what the hell was in that carpet that made it so flammable? I totally don't believe this story. Maybe we could get the Mythbusters on it?

You'd do much better with marathon runners.
