I submit to you: Bubble Bobble

Not only did it have 800 thousand levels of increasing difficulty, not only were the controls ridiculously unresponsive, not only was the last enemy a creature with an abnormally large amount of life energy, but you could ONLY win with two people and you BOTH had to survive the whole time.

NINJA GAIDEN. Fuckin' Tecmo in the 80's...fuckin' Tecmo. Couldn't make something like Tecmo Bowl again.

Bionic Commando. I can't tell you how much of my childhood was spent in the futile pursuit of completing that game.

It was basically impossible to make it through Metroid without help, unless you enjoyed bombing every section of floor at random.

Batman. I never did make it past Level 3...or was it Level 5? Anyway, there were these things that were impossible to kill or move past. They were big and would keep jumping on you til you died. But they were invincible!

Anyway, yeah.

I forgot about Ninja Gaiden. It was so long and you had to start over from scratch every time you played. Yeah that one drove me nuts.

The the clinkity clink grappling hook sound effects were key.

I beat the game, but only with a PC emulator and quicksave wink

I remember that! I was so glad that I'd only rented that game instead of buying it.

I beat every game mentioned thus far save Gauntlet (II--the one that literally didn't end) and Bubble Bobble. Pity the childhood.

Agreed. As much as I loved/played that game, I could never beat the three headed dragon.

The one game that made a 6 y/o fat kid cry every night, muthalovin' Ghouls and Ghosts!! My older brother couldn't even beat the game, and his fingers were calloused like cinderblocks. My lil knight dude stayed runnin around in his little heart boxers, poor guy musta hated me as I constantly had him battling the forces of evil in the buff. Awesome game, but it was a bastard!
