In a squeaker over Punch-Out.
Semifinalists included Tecmo Bowl and Double Dribble.

Pretty much the same game, '94 was the first one to have "one-timers" and detailed player profiles.

You also may recognize '94 as the video game being played in the movie "Swingers"

Also, there is NO WAY that Double Dribble should have made it out of the first round. There has NEVER been a decent basketball videogame. NEVER.

It's not so much me as it's Roenick. He's good.

And yes. Double Dribble sucked balls.

NBA Hangtime on the 64 disagrees with you. What a brilliantly stupidawesome game that was.

You can make their heads bleed in this one.

Super Tecmo Bowl definatly should have won. I still own that and NHL94 and I sure as hell don't play NHL94 anymore despite how great it was in it's day.

Is it also the game in "Mallrats"?

"Breakfasts come and go, Renee. But Hartford, 'the Whale'? They only beat Vancouver once, maybe twice in a lifetime."

PS, I know nothing about video games, but I like to quote Mallrats whenever possible.

PPS - Boston.com readers also voted the Patriots' '02 Superbowl win as the greatest moment in Boston sports history OVER THE RED SOX WINNING THE WORLD SERIES. I have never trusted them since.

Fun Fact: I own a Hartford Whalers jersey. I bought it when they moved to Carolina because it was just so fucking sharp. I think I'm going to bust that out today as a matter of fact.

Also: I think that Mallrats was a different game, but it's been a while since I've seen it, so I don't know for sure.

It was all star hockey for Sega Genesis in Mallrats.

Mallrats might be '94 or '95....same game, though.

Seriously, it's a slacker classic.

It won because it was mentioned in Swingers. If they were playing Punch-Out instead, that would have won.

I call bullshit. Where the hell is Madden '93?

Even though Punch-Out is one of my all-time fav games, I even play it on my cell phone during down time.

And to echo the sentiments of Vince Vaughn in Swingers, referring to the winning game...

Why'd they get rid of the fighting? It was the best part of the old version.

'96 was miles better, but it's no Blades of Steel. that right there was the most perfect hockey game ever made.

still, Bases Loaded 3 and NBA Jam are both way better than the NHL series anyways. hell, i'd even say Basewars is close to - if not better than - NHL '94 (but not '96).
