I cannot even begin to imagine what it would be like to know that I had no other choice than to leave my dog to get out of NOLA alive, only to find out he was shot to death before he could be rescued.

That seriously made me cry... frown

The smiley-happy-dog at the end made me smile, though...So I don't know how to feel anymore.

Shooting a dog from a distance is far from humane. That's "sport."

I'm going to houston next week hopefully to pull dogs out of crowded shelters and drive them to california so that they have more room for refugee dogs. I wish I could go to louisiana though and save all the dogs that still need to be saved. frown

I wish that there was more I could do for these animals then just donate money & supplies.

But it's people like you who make me feel better about humans in general. It makes me really happy to know that you are going down there to do that. Amazing.

Don't worry just yet, it seems like the "word from above" keeps changing by the minute. We're dealing with the military now, nothing is ever set in stone when they run the show.

I don't understand how anyone could do that to an animal trained and bred to know that humans will feed and help them. It's completely fucking heartless.

Fuck, I shouldn't have watched that. Now I can't stop crying.

I'm pretty sure the sheriffs department down there hunt nutria on a regular basis too, thats probably why they are desensitized to killing animals like dogs even though it is pretty obvious to everyone else that they definitely are not feral.
They are domesticated pets, wtf.

I watched the vid and got the feeling that they patrol around and think to themselves "Gotta shoot somthin' *shrug*"

This is a great list of agencies that are helping the non-human victims of Katrina.

Perhaps with enough money and volunteers these agencies can get to some of the animals before sub-humans like Sgt. Minton.

i wouldn't compare a nutria rat to a dog or any other domesticated animal.

Neither would I, but I could see a bunch of people justifying it with the same reasoning, fucked up as it is.
People were asking "how someone could do such a thing".

If they really cared they'd use a more efficient method, like a carbine or exploding meat.

I am sensitive to this topic, and god knows I'm against people shooting dogs. But personally, I'd rather be shot than starve to death. At this point the animals they're encountering are hungry as hell and terribly frightened. Even a domesticated dog will attack if under enough stress, and it happens in much less stressful circumstances than what these dogs have been through. People who encounter these animals cannot risk being bitten and having open wounds exposed to toxic water. Several days ago was the time to rescue these babies. Now I'm afraid the ones left on the streets just need to be put out of their misery. No I didn't watch the video you linked. I've seen footage of these animals on tv, and it breaks my heart.

Well watch the vid and get back to us, those dogs were running around perfectly fine.

If you won't watch the vid, picture a neighborhood dog that got out of its house.
Its wandering around slightly confused, not hostile at all. How would you feel if someone just came up and shot your dog?

These dogs are nowhere near starved to death, many, many, many, can be saved and there are groups from all over the country trying to get their to save them.
There is no reason to shoot them if all they are doing is wandering around, they are completely misguided at this point in time.

Yeah, that's fucked. This whole thing is a clusterfuck. There are toddlers being sent to different states than their parents, people that want to help but aren't allowed and people whose job it is to help and won't. Btw, one reason I haven't watched the video is because I'm on an old ass laptop and it could take all night and even then I probably wouldn't be able to hear it.
