You almost certainly knew him as Gilligan. If you're lucky, you may have even known him as Maynard G. Krebs. He spent the better part of his life making us laugh and now Bob Denver, everybody's li'l buddy, has died at age 70, succumbing to complications from his cancer treatments.

He died Friday at Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital in North Carolina of complications from treatment he was receiving for cancer, his agent, Mike Eisenstadt, told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

His wife, Dreama, and children Patrick, Megan, Emily and Colin were with Denver, who also had undergone quadruple heart bypass surgery earlier this year.

"He was my everything and I will love him forever," Dreama Denver said in a statement.

Although in recent years his pop culture status had fallen to the point that the only real attention he got in the press came from a marijuana bust, Denver was a brilliant physical comedian who influenced the work of comedians for years to come -- from John Ritter to Rowan Atkinson to Jim Carrey.

Speaking on a personal level, it's impossible to overstate the love I had for Gilligan's Island when I was a kid. It's always been so much a part of my life that I chose the Skipper's name as my SG nickname when I joined the site.

Bon voyage, li'l buddy.

Yep, I spent many a Saturday morning thrilling to the novelty of Gilligan in space. And, wouldn't you know it, a few years later they actually gave us Gilligan in space. (I'd really love to see that cartoon again; I'm sure it'll be horrible in hindsight, but it still has to be completely fun as campy nostalgia.)

Best sentiment I've seen yet. Y'know what I would've like to see... Scooby and the gang on Gilligan's Island. Hell, I even watched the movies... ah, Return to Gilligan's Island.
