Seems he died last Friday
after a long battle with cancer.

http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/entertainment/12573160.htm

Bob Denver, whose portrayal of goofy first mate Gilligan on the 1960s television show "Gilligan's Island," made him an iconic figure to generations of TV viewers, has died, his agent confirmed Tuesday. He was 70.

Denver died Friday at Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital in North Carolina of complications from treatment he was receiving for cancer, his agent, Mike Eisenstadt, told The Associated Press. Denver's death was first reported by "Entertainment Tonight."

Denver had also undergone quadruple heart bypass surgery earlier this year.

Denver's wife, Dreama, and his children Patrick, Megan, Emily and Colin were with him when he died.

"Bob is the finest human being I have ever known," Dreama Denver said in a statement released by Eisenstadt. "He was my everything and I will love him forever."

Denver's signature role was "Gilligan," the inept first mate of the tour boat the Minnow, whose bumbling got a group of tourists marooned on an uncharted desert island for three seasons in the 1960s and several movies for decades afterward.

But when he took the role in 1964 he was already known to TV audiences for another iconic character, that of Maynard G. Krebs, the bearded beatnik friend of Dwayne Hickman's Dobie in the "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis," which aired from 1959 to 1963.

yeah yeah he'll always be remembered in that gawd awful red shirt
and Kangol white hat...

For a pre-school beatnik like me back in the 70's;
he was the kool kat who talked about Thelonious Monk well before
I even knew what Be-Bop be, Daddy-o!

Maynard G. Krebs was my counter culture role model back before I
had even read the Beats!

And even though I would soon learn that
bongoes & turtlenecks had LITTLE
to do with the Beats...
I would always identify the culture with that free spirited kind of attitude;
and a happy anarchy of stoned Grace, that I first saw in his characterization.

Figures!!!

(I just needed something to post about besides the
overwhelming Katrina tragedy)

I used to watch The many loves of Dobie Gillis . . . . Denver's character represented the whole "beat" movement. The sales of bongo drums were at an all-time high, probably thanks to him! And who can forget Tuesday Weld as Thalia Menninger? Yum!

One of the most recognizable character actors . . . he'll surely be missed!

You are always a funny man, good Sir without an underscore!

I think I'm gonna smoke a lil' something myself in his honor!
Didn't he get busted a few times...
his goldfish pond was where he hid his plants right?!?!

It'll help me get thru tonight while I go volunteer
and help the new evacuees spilling into my city.

Cheers!

You're thinking of that rumor about Alfalfa
who died while running guns for Nigerian rebels....
or was that Buckwheat?!?!

No, I think his rumor was that he was the second gunman in Dallas.
Or did he die in 'Nam with Mikey of
"He likes it! He likes it!" cereal fame!

Or was that Eddie from the Beaver show?!?!
That 70's porn star!

Fire in my face
Like a red hot griddle
Pants got wet
As I started to piddle
Mystery of flight's
Just a funny, funny riddle
And now I'm an ocean bouy

Yes, I'm going to hell for that. And you're coming with me for giggling.

But on to BOB Denver. Even though I was never a big Gilligan fan, I did like the guy. Especially during his turn as a beatnick on the short-lived Doby Gillis show. So long, little buddy. May your waters be calm.

This really, really bums me out. I absolutely loved Bob Denver. And those of you who recognize my username can probably guess I was a big Gilligan's Island fan.

I submitted this as a news story before realizing there was already a thread devoted to it. Doh...
