Exactly what criteria does a movie have to meet to qualify as being "based on a true story"?

For those who don't know, The Exorcism of Emily Rose is a movie about the trial of the priest charged with negligent homicide after the girl he was told to exorcise (Emily Rose) dies of starvation. It's all about science versus faith as the defense tries to prove Emily was possessed by demons.

Here's some information about the story the film is based on.

What pisses me off is how the trailers show demons and shit. I may be wrong, but it looks like they're going to pass off demonic possession as a legitimate possibility. Sorry, but demons don't exist. Pretending they do just leads to stupid crap like this.

Yeah? Wanna tell me about it? I promise I won't mock you or try to think up logical explanations after you're done (I thought you were kidding).

Dude, that is some of the freakiest shit I have ever heard. I have had ... hmmmm glances when I was much younger but thankfully it passed and did not come back. I try to not even think about it for fear it may return... something you have no control over and really just feel like nobody can stop or help. Uggggghhhh... I do not envy you this burden ...

most of my childhood I was followed around by ghosts. I used to be able to see them all the time, up until my teens, when I made the conscious effort to just try to block them out...to not see them.

I used to see demons too. they were the ones who were not friendly.
they were the ones who would scare the shit out of my cats.
they were the ones who always came around when I was blue...when I seemed weak.
demons are not a good thing to see. especially as a child.
I knew they were trying to get me. somehow...some way.
my grandparents' house was the worst. it was like a festival for evil in there.
disposessed spirits, lonely and bored, and the ones that would stare back at me in the mirror from over my shoulder as I'd walk past. sometimes I'd fall asleep with them hovering over me, sometimes I'd awake and I knew they were there. I'd scream and my grandmother would come in. I'd see them flit out past her in the doorway, rustling the curtains as they passed.

the worst was when they'd sit and whisper thoughts in the darkened room.
I'd hear the whispers.
horrible things.

often times I knew if houses were haunted before being told.
I'd see them peeking out the windows at me.

I'm not making this shit up.
I don't watch horror flicks, because I hate remembering this stuff. I've seen enough.

I spend most of my time in the light now, because they don't like to be there.
although sometimes...late at night...if my mood is right...I occasionally still catch them hanging around.

And there's no... possible... erm.. OTHER explanation for this?

i believe there is "something" after death. i don't know what it is, and part of me doesn't care. if it's really there, i'll find out eventually. that's the scientist in me. however, the belief comes from experience. i used to work in an old building known to be "haunted." things happened. the scientist/doctor in me can explain most supernatural occurances as misinterpretted natural phenomena. however, i've seen enough first hand to know that "logic" has its boundaries.

I'm serious as a heart attack. I just think it's funny that everyone dismisses what they themselves have not seen.
like "that must be bullshit, because I never saw anything like that. that can't be real."

well look,
all I'm saying is it is.

very fucking real.

and no, I'm not insane.

i totally believe you man. i've never SEEN demons or ghosts. but i know they're there.

Okay, but how many of you believe demons can possess people? Also, how many of you people that, if demons could possess people, they'd just make them act really crazy and maybe pee themselves a little as opposed to using their bodies to commit genuinely evil deeds?

Any way you slice it...it's a HOLLYWOOD film.

Yeah, but some people still believe this kinda thing happens and, sometimes, people go untreated or even die as a result.

Have you actually seen the film, or just the trailer. Maybe it's like the Kurosawa film Rashomon, told from multiple perspectives, changing according to the person's personal beliefs? Maybe the stupid just tossed the demon story part to get people in the seats?

The other day i was lying on my bed reading a book and my cat was staring wide eyed and very uneasily at the ceiling in the corner of the room and could not be dissuaded to look away. i kept looking over my shoulder and wondering why i couldn't see what he saw. it was creepy as fuck.

Dkmfc, I know EXACTLY what you're talking about.
Ive seen things since I was little too.
And, my mom and stepdad's house is haunted. Everyone who's lived there in the 10 years since we moved in has seen and heard things. The house is built where a lot of dead people are buried (from a long time ago, it's on land that was Native American grounds) so there's a lot of wierd things that happen there.
And of course, people don't believe me when I tell them stuff like that either.

No, but I've read some early reviews. They even added some stuff where the defense attorney is haunted by unseen spirits (which, of course, didn't happen).

And anything that perpetuates the belief people who act crazy are possessed by the devil and need to be restrained and read Psalms instead of being given the help they need is harmful, in my opinion. They don't need to target the Vatican because they're going to believe in the need for exorcists no matter what.

sure.

maybe I've been insane since I was a baby.
maybe the things that everyone in my family, with the exception of my grandmother who was dying of alzheimers, saw in the mirror and around the house were just a big, collective delusion.

maybe we all shudder when we talk of that house because we are all nuts.
maybe they didn't follow me after we moved out.
maybe I've imagined everything.

Hey, it's just ockham's razor, man.

You assert the existence of beings which, if found to exist, would invalidate EVERY law of physics. Beings which can travel through matter, become visible and invisible at will, and possess no mass, matter, or energy which has ever been measured. Beings which can effect human emotions through means of communication that have never been seen before.

...and yet you find the idea of a group of humans having a collective delusion unlikely?

i cant comment on what anyone else has experienced, but i grew up with major events much like what dkmfc went through (shared by others as his were, also, by people related & unrelated to me, some aware of it being in relation to me and some who had no idea why they were occuring).

part of that experience has been that during some of the worst times i was being attacked the effects included being pulled out of my body, to speak words not coming from me, to have my body do things i had no control over & simply had to watch, and have had others be given urges to harm me & say and do some things they had no will to.

Don't let them bother you, Dk.

Those of us who know the shit happens, and have been privvy to shit like that, whether we liked it or not, feel your pain.

Consequentally, grandparents' houses seem to be a pretty hot spot for that shit, I've found. My grandparents' house in Florida, before they moved, was chock full of the walkers.
