Kodak stopped servicing and producing slide projectors 18 months ago. Because of that Fuji dropped their Velvia 50 silde film.

Analog is on its way out. Chances are you'll still be able to buy VHS players for a long time coming, especially since some movies can only be found on cassette still. Even if DVD is replaced by another disc format all the new players will, hopefully, be backward compatible. Cassettes just weren't a very efficient form of storing information, because of the size and the short life, since 25 plays on your average cassette reduced the quality 30%, or so I've read, not sure how the quality is measured.

Yeah what about all the great movies that won't make the cut for dvd release, are we just to lose them forever?

You can get all of them on VCD from asia/europe. It's simple, easy, and looks better than VHS most of the time. You can also VCD them yourself if you want, it's dead easy.

Incidentally, all the illegal movie-hawkers I've seen in New York recently have been selling dvds... shocked

Why would anyone miss the VHS? Which part of DVDs make you nostalgic? That they're more permanent, have vastly superior picture quality, crystal clear 5 channel sound, are more attractive to store, and take up less space?

Just poor suckers like me who can't afford a tivo. I have to record those episodes of Lost while I'm out somehow.

You can get a TiVo for like $50 or less on eBay. If you have cable, your cable provider will let you rent a DVR for like $5/mo, you can probably get it for free with satellite.

I don't even have a DVD player!!

haha

Im screwed!!

I'll still be using tape players though, I will eventually get a DVD player since they are very cheap now. I still even bust out my walkman sometimes, and I actually get stares when I switch my tapes.

there's nothing quite like finding an old VHS, and having no idea whats on it. Porno? Wrestlemania? A bad TV edit of Scarface? An Adam Curry hosted Headbangers Ball? VHS, you will be missed. ooo aaa

Mine usually have 120 Minutes episodes on them!

HA that cracks me up, i for some reason have like 3 tapes that are all 120 minutes episodes that i came across not too long ago.... (ok i read over that sentence like 3 times and for some reason i think its worded horribly wrong, but ill post it anyway, you get the point)

No nostalgia. Fact is theres simply stuff not out on dvd thats still on vhs. (oh yeah nevermind the original star wars series... youre NOT finding the originals on dvd so far that I know of....) But mainly price.... vcr's that ive sene run maybe around what 35 bucks now..... even the el generic dvd player runs around 85-100 --- and thats the walmart breaks on you in a year under no replacement guarantee kind---)
main issue.... make it fecking cheaper.
thats the only reason most of us already DONT use them, that and a certain availability problem with a good at least 50% of movies out there. Especially some harder to get foreign or indie films. god those are a pain.

We used to have so many recorded movies taped on VHS cassettes. Somewhere along the way they got scattered around, and a lot of them have became so noisy and of such low quality that they're unwatchable. I much prefer DVD.

I just need Wonder Years and the first few seasons of Power Rangers on DVD and I'd be totally happy.

I've got a 5-disc DVD changer, with remote, that's lasted me 2 years, and I got it for $49.99.

Can't argue with the loss of vhs. It's horrible, I never liked it. I will miss that sound though of the tape being sucked into the vcr and then that brief moment of panic when you hit eject and wonder if its ever going to come back out.

I recently tried to watch some old MST3Ks that I recorded, and found them all jumpy and nearly unwatchable. Kinda pissed me off, they were sitting untouched in a box for years. So good riddance.

But on the other hand, it was still cool to find them. I can't really imagine having something Tivoed for years and stumbling onto it one day.

u have to play the tapes every once in awhile or they go to crap and don't lay the tapes down on it's side the film sags.

At my old job at a video store we were the first one in the area to go all DVD. We sold off all our VHS a bin at a time for $1 each... Canadian... with cover boxes. Some people bought 30-40 at a time.

The only real problem I have these days with VHS is while it still looks totally fine on my smaller TV, it looks like absolute shit on a 52" or any other modern big screen. All my original tapes look like copies of copies.

Good riddance to a technology that should never have won over Betamax's smaller form factor and better picture quality.

Beta failed because Sony wouldn't allow porno on the format.

This brings back a memory from one of my exes.

Every time I went over her house to pick her up, I got annoyed by the blinking 12:00 display on their VCR. So one night I spent the thirty seconds it took to figure out the thing and put the correct time in.

And then the next time I went back to pick her up, I discovered why it had been blinking that way all those years. Her father always unplugged the VCR when he found it turned on, no doubt because the blinking clock annoyed him. Of course, the next time the girls plugged it back in to watch a video I'd brought over, I discovered my work had been undone by her Dad once again.
