whether it's nervous and inarticulate like Kanye here, or forceful and direct like this bit with New Orleans mayor Nagin, people are really starting to cross some lines about what is/isn't acceptable to say to the press, to the public...

some honest, from-the-heart talk is coming out, and i'm liking seeing it.

That guy is really full of himself. What was the shit about going shopping? It wasn't nearly as bad as his rant on the Grammys or whatever a couple years ago.

I agree pretty much with what he was trying to say. It would have been much more effective if he had just said "George Bush doesn't care about black people", and left it at that.

I hope there's some raw footage of this that gets out - I'd love to see what Mike Meyers weird look right at the end turned into!

is kanye on drugs? i think he was just mad nervous b/c he knew that he was going to drop that line.

Probably really nervous, I'd say. I mean, I know I'd be pretty nervous if I was going to say that.

And on another note, do people really think his star is going to fall? It's not like the people who are likely to be up in arms about this the most are his fans.

I think more because of his inarticulate unconfident communication - the opposite of his persona to date.... than what he said.

i think that when people like anderson cooper and larry king are cutting off senators and cabinet members mid sentence and nearly breaking down at times during their broadcasts, voices cracking, that we can forgive someone looking a little shellshocked and traumatized, and, well, bitter as well. it would be incredibly easy to be bitter about all of this. so i'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on it, and as someone may have mentioned, i still think he comes off as more eloquent than our fearless leader off the cuff.

that 3 second pause between when Kanye says the line and when Mike realizes what he just heard and turns his head is what gets me.

I thought that he just looked emotional, which is what made it seem to me that he was saying what he really felt.
My whole life I've had to deal with the stigma of at times being unable to control my emotions, but as a result it makes me feel that uncomfortable emotional reactions make people more real. Not that people can't fake emotions, but newscasters and celebrities are trained to not let real emotions show, so when they do show emotions it makes me feel that they are truly affected. Anderson Copper's sputtering made him seem really upset and Kanye's less than eloquent response felt the same to me.

i agree with you.. i caught the end part where he said "bush does not care about black people". i had my "wtf" face on.

this was edited where i live = they cut straight to local news then chris tucker.

They didn't get it cut off in time in Chicago. I sat there watching him rant and my jaw dropped! All I have to say is WOW. confused

what I find to be the best part is when it cuts to chris tucker and he just looks back and forth, presumably at producers or the like, with a "what the fuck do you want me to do?" look on his face. that and the looks mike myers gives are the reason i have watched this video about 400 times already today.

I've got to admit, it does seem a little bit like watching a train wreck in progress. And the look on Mike Myers face the entire time is one of pure discomfort... But Kanye just looks and sounds completely nervous and heartbroken... kind of like he can't believe he's saying what he's saying but he just has to make sure everyone hears it.

Right, exactly. It looked to forced, like it was a speech he had worked to memorize for the last 48 hours non stop and then just stuttered through the whole thing. And Tucker looked way off guard. I think I'll have to go watch it again. Whoa.

Better speech that George Bush has given all week.

Oh and yeah he loses is way in the middle trying to talk about how America is totally set up to help the poor last and his own guilt over going shopping before giving aid. Then he quickly throws in something about the war draining resources but how those people have been given orders to shoot survivors anyway.

Basically I think he was very aware that he was going to be cut off and wanted to get all of his points said before that happened. So he started to panic. He should've rapped it.

Anyway, bravo, Kanye.

George Bush on the other hand, with all of the time in the world to say something useful and a thousand speech advisors could only come up with 'We're gonna build a bigger better house for that dead family, guhick, guhick... once" Yes, yes, very nice... we're is the fucking airlift?

And what, exactly, is the time or the place? Here he has a national audience and a block of time at his disposal, and there are some serious fucking burning issues that need to be addressed. Kanye says that even he has been guilty of turning away from the television when the images became too much for him. That's what all of us have the luxury of doing right now - turning away, or turning it off. Try living right in the middle of it, facing it every second and living the life. It would be pretty fucking hard to turn it off. I really can't believe some of the comments I've read here so far. Yes I know these are mainly directed at Kanye's rant, but he's saying what a lot of us are thinking. Personally, I'm furious. Why did it take until Saturday to start airlifting people out of New Orleans? I can guarantee you that if the city were full of rich white people instead of poor black (and white) people there would have been a major effort to get everyone out. Give Kanye West his own concert right now so we can hear everything he has to say without it being a rushed, panicked job.

This was NOT a political rally OR his own press conference. He was asked to come help use his celebrity to raise money for a tragedy, not use the time to talk about his political views. This was NOT a political show by any means.

I dunno, post how you feel on your very busy, well visited website. Spend some cash and see if you can get some network to let you hold a press conference so you can say what you want. Hold a public rally somewhere and speak your mind. You know that would undoubtedly end up getting media coverage in the end. Do whatever, just don't take something that was supposed to be non-political and make it that way. It wasn't supposed to be a block of time for "his disposal". It was supposed to be him sticking to a script that was intended to help people by raising money. That concert supposed to be about PEOPLE in general. Not black people, not white people, not hispanic people...just PEOPLE. The ones who needed the money and the donations and the help. If you think for one second that his tirade didn't dissuade at least some people from continuing to watch the show, and possibly donate money, then you are probably misaken.

And I really feel for the guy, considering he threw in the fact that he "went shopping" before he realized that it might be a good time to donate some money to the cause. Bravo. He is quite the humanitarian.
whatever
