Ooops. Forgot about Third Rock From the Sun. That show is pure class, one point back to America I think.

While British TV comedy is very good as a rule, the idea that America is "catching up" is ridiculous. our educational system, health care, president may be shit, but when you start dissing our TV--you've gone too far, amigo!

I've chosen to get upset about this. I'm ok with that.

the fact is though we have more groundbreaking and intelligent comedy than you! forgetting cartoons

apart from monkeydust as mentioned earlier... the first couple series of that were genius

thing is these shows are all a bit 'silly', funny but cheesy and silly

british shows like league of gentlemen, brasseye, peepshow, mighty boosh, nathan barley etc were all completely different takes on comedy, original and intellingent and dark or true to life. theres no studio audience there to tell you when to laugh in most cases, theres little or no slapstick... they all give new takes on comedy.

i mean like reno 911... it makes me laugh but its a bit "oh haha its a police officer dressed up as an acid freak trying to fit in and... oh they have no pockets for change, look at them run, ho ho ho"

but peepshow is "fucking hell, this is EXACTLY what i'm thinking when im walking down the street or with my mates! these two guys are like ME split into 2 different people!!! this is so funny because it's making me realise how ridiculous NORMAL life is" just... so much more intelligent!

plus you guys dont have chris morris, and he's one of the few living genius'. and im not using the term loosley, he truely is a genius. very mysterious too...

there is no point checking the US office, there was no point in it being made, the real office is ricky gervais, it is his character, his life experience, his script, his show... he makes the uneasy aspect of it work so well. it is him, and it doesnt work without him.

don't know if this counts as it's not really "written" comedy, but i still find Never mind the buzzcocks consistently hillarious, and their booking Billie piper just to mercilessly take the piss made me feel like there was some justice in the world back when i was 16 or so.

and Whose Line Is It Anyway too, we had that first damnit.

YAAAYYY Young Ones!

i watched lots of Monty Python as a child so it's a very nostalgic show for me, and as far as i'm concerned it's a cardinal sin not to like it....watched Red Dwarf when i was a little older.

the Office is very funny, and i do like the American version as well, because how can you not love Steve Carrell? the episode with the sensitivity training was one of the most hilarious things i have ever seen, particularly the scene with everyone wearing the tags with different ethnicities on them. i recently started watching another Ricky Gervais show called Extras and it's crazy funny. i adore it. apparently Gervais will be replacing Henry Winkler as the Bluth family's lawyer on Arrested Development this season, which i am excited about (though i'll miss Zuckercorn). i love Arrested Development sooooo much.

in other defense of American comedy:
Stella
Upright Citizen's Brigade
Mr. Show
Reno 911 - didn't like it much the first season but it's consistently gotten better, and i love Mary Birdsong from Crossballs (she's the new recruit)
Strangers with Candy
The Daily Show

as for cartoons....i can't believe people are still buying into Family Guy. that show is stale as hell. i heard that South Park was renewed for another three seasons though, so that's good news. Venture Brothers is coming back next spring (FINALLY), Tom Goes to the Mayor is doing another season....

now i've got the Young Ones theme stuck in my head, but that's good, it beat that Beach Boys song right outta my head!

I finally saw the trailer park boys the other night it was quite funny.

They got this rocket and the weird guy in glasses was all excited.

There was this other Canadian comedy show I used to watch but cant think of it for the life of me right now. A bit pointless mentioning really, but I have now and I cant feel arsed touching my backspace button.

I love Mark Lamar. Is that wrong?

I was watching this on UKTV down here last night. So funny.

Admittedly, the US is pulling out some good shows (Scrubs by far the standout in my opinion), but UK just has this other style that is so much dryer and funnier.

Drop The Dead Donkey
Red Dwarf
The Office
Vicar of Dibley
Kumars
Goodness Gracious Me
As Time Goes By (say a word, I'll kill you)
Little Britain
Black Books
Brittas Empire

The list goes on and on and on...

I wish Australian comedy was as good, but we haven't produced anything majorly decent in a while. A couple of shows, but nothing stellar.

Does anyone remember from years back the Bill Bailey show? I wish I could see that again.

Also, Absolutely deserves a mention, just for the Stoneybridge sketches.

Good point. I don't know where that image came from, but I'm fairly certain no one on the show has ever used that quote.

Other awesome Canadian comedy shows: Kids in the Hall, and to a lesser extent, SCTV. There are others, but these are the main ones which have been exported.

the weird guy in glasses is bubbles get it right.

TPB represent!! What What!

sorry

but seriously is anyone keeping up with the new BBC show EXTRAS, cause that shit is fucking golden the episode with kate winslet is the hardest I have laughed in a while.

in american defense besides many that have already been mentioned the new "my name is earl" shit is pretty damn good. any show that mentions huffing paint on thankgiving is gonna be good. still can't believe that it's on nbc though totally seems like it would have been on fox, just doesn't fit the NBC format
