Gas prices are rising. This isn't news; we've been watching it happen for months. However, in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, experts warn we could be forced to pinch even more pennies.

"There's no question gas will hit $4 a gallon," Ben Brockwell, director of pricing at the Oil Price Information Service, said. "The question is how high will it go and how long will it last?

They warn that the best case scenario places gas at about $3.00 for the next few months, with hopes of it dropping back down to $2.50 by the end of the year. Worst case scenario? Averaging $3.50 for the next 4-6 months, rather than only a few.

If you were thinking about trading in your gas guzzler for a smaller, more fuel-efficient car, now might be a wonderful time to do it.

This is the point where I have to wonder if it's an incredible coincidence that the Bush Family made lots of money in oil, we're at war in the middle of oil country, oil companies are making record profits, and prices are at an all-time high. confused

This is the worst argument ever. We are perfectly aware that other places have higher fuel prices. What your argument does not cover is the rapid rate of increase. So other countries are paying $6.00 a unit....were they paying $3.00 a year & a half ago?

Our price is less than the europe in large part (though not entirely) because we don't tax it as heavily as they do.

The current price spike is an attempt by gas retailers to make the supply they have last through the impending (ongoing) post-Katrina rush. Whenever there is a holy-shit-batman event (WTC, Katrina) that might have even a remote effect on oil prices, everyone runs to the pumps. If the price of gas stays the same, people will buy all they can, and cause a short-term shortage.

This is an effort to avoid that. I don't like it much, but it's not price gouging.

What is scary is the mid-term shortage that WILL happen due to interrupted oil flow. If people are still trying to snatch all the gas they can when that hits, it will start a 1970s-era panic and we will have gas rationing. Hopefully using the Strategeric Petroleum Resever will help reduce the effects of this.

And boohiss to whomever was saying we should get rid of that a few months ago.

Sorry Snags you'll be complaining soon enough I just heard from some co-workers that gas is up to $5 in Atlanta's subburbs. But hey you live a half mile from work and you never get out of the house any way, so there you go.

I also think this is a bullshit argument. Leaving out facts such as the United States being the fourth largest country in the world, having the most motor vehicles, and having the longest average distance from home-to-work and focusing just price is weak.

There is a lot more to it than just price-per-gallon, and I can only wish people would open their eyes to that.

Oh yeah, not to mention the fact that this picture is comparing the entire US average to the high prices found in SINGLE CITIES.

weeeeeeeeaaaaaaaakkkkkkk.

somehow the bicycle argument just doesn't work in our country.....
i NEED to drive a truck for work. i need to haul my toolboxes with me at all times. i drive 9 miles to and from work every day. during the day , i travel anywhere from 15-500 miles doing service work on tractors at farms, that need to be fixed so the crops can be managed, if the equipment fails, the food can't be harvested, the cows won't get fed, the country will run out of food,. if we do not drivw trucks, that food can't get from point a to point b to point c to the store shelves where you get it from.
we ARE oil dependant, the goverment and the corporations know this and are exploiting the shit out of that fact, because they know we are going to pay whatever we have to to get the fuel.
if it's getting so high, wy doesn't the state and federal goverment suspend the .75 cents or so per gallon tax they put on petroleum fuel products for a few months?

Dude, Sniggity, I dig you and all man, so I'm not trying to sound hostile, but you live in the city, near your job. Thats a breeze compared to say, my mom, who has to drive an hour or so each way to work. She lives even further out in the woods than I do, and has to drive to Norcross and back every day.

MARTA fucking blows on my side of town too.

I envy you right now man, for real. I just had to quit one of my jobs, because I couldn't afford to work aynmore. You and HM make plenty enough to afford a nice car, a nice place in the city, and these gas prices. Remember man, I'm poor white trash. wink

If I could just take the tram or bus everywhere I needed to be, high gas prices wouldn't bother me. But as it is, I've been driving 100+ miles a day, in a car that gets 15 MPG, if I'm lucky. At least 90% of my tip money from delivering pizza was going to gas, so I had to quit.

Oh yeah, and I miss you guys dammit. Come out sometime. tongue

The price of oil yesterday jumped by a record $3.70 a barrel in New York thanks to Katrina shutting down 95% of the Gulf of Mexico's production, which can't be helping.

The advantage here (UK), I suppose, is that we are taxed heavier, so while we've had to deal with same price increases, they're less as a percentage of the starting price.

I don't envy the way prices are rising in the US at all.
