Occasionally, there's some negative feelings on the boards here on suicidegirls.com about Wal-Mart and the dominance they have in the US retail sector. However, the tale is not the same in the UK: the president of Wal-Mart has called for the dominance of its main competitor to be investigated.

ASDA yesterday moved to recapture its "cheapest supermarket" tag with price cuts and promotions worth more than £130m as the head of its American parent called for an investigation into arch-rival Tesco.

Lee Scott, the president and chief executive of ASDA owner Wal-Mart, believes the government should investigate the dominance of Tesco, which last week was shown to have increased its share of the food market to a record 30.5%. ASDA is in second place, with a 16.7% share.

The purchase of ASDA by Wal-Mart took place six years ago, and brought British customers the "Always Low Prices" slogan.

I'm sure if Alanis Morrisette were rewriting Ironic, this story would get a mention in the lyrics.

one of the failings of a free market system is that consumers actually get a choice were the purchase their goods.

That, Alanis my dear, is Irony.

I think one of the underreported aspects of Wal-Mart is how much of their growth has been due to the cooperation of governments with them. They'll find governments in cities willing to give them cushy zoning deals, and even handle some of the costs of construction and give them tax breaks, and put their new Wal-Marts there, along with other things like distribution centers.

So this seems especially laughable to me, since I don't think they'd be nearly their size without the cooperation of quite a few governmental agencies.

I don't think wal-mart is making a profit in too many places outside the US. THey're trying their hardest to do so, but that was four years ago and things change within four years so I may be wrong.

This has NOTHING to do with Walmart. Don't spam the boards.

(It's also a fairly ridiculous and impractical idea.)

Have those bastards looked at their own percentages out here in the States? I had no problem with Wal-Mart back in the Sam Walton days. But the damned kids.

When I was living in Austin two years ago, they tried to build a Super Wal-Mart over part of the Edwards Aquifer. Not only would we have had the parking lot of God covering our water supply, we'd also have to deal with the occasional mishap in the tire and lube express.

Needless to say, that shit got voted right out of town. But then I come back for Christmas and find that they just moved it east a few miles, situating it on an old driving range (same as in my old town).

I wish the common people could regularly be as relentless as these assholes. Maybe then we wouldn't be suffering under the weight of "friendly," "neighborhood" conglomerates.

I laughed at what spazism said.
I can't believe my friends still send me these lame junk emails, when they know I don't forward stuff out.
Besides, I don't even own a car....

Both Wikipedia and The Times peg it at around 10%. I thought it was higher than that.

The reason why Tesco do so much better in the UK is because they don't just have big supermarkets, but they also have many, many small local convenience stores (Tesco Metro/Express etc) and Asda don't seem to be challenging this aspect of the business.

Also, it seems, if British people are going to have to cave in and support the Global economy, they'd rather support a British multinational than an American one – don't forget that outside of our political leadership there is a lot of animosity towards Americanism in this country. Thats just the impression that I get off people.

Yeah.... that and also that ASDA is for chavs... Lowest prices bring out the lowest classes who start fighting in the isles or generally get in the way with their pushchairs... and their own brand foods taste of arse so you have to buy brand names and pay more anyway!
I taste the difference and goto sainsbury's.

I was working at Asda during my University holidays when Wal-Mart took over.

They had planned to be the Number 1 supermarket within 3 years - which I guess is now about 3 years ago.
I'm glad to see its not working out for them. They changed all sorts of pay structures to screw people over.

I now shop in Tescos or Sainsburys. biggrin

Pah, I shop in Tesco over Asda anyday. Did they ever stop to think that the reason they have such a dominance in the food market is because they offer the best service, sell the best products and are just all round most convenient?

there isn't an asda in my town, but there are morrison's and somerfield, as well as a sainsbury's a reasonable distance away. the tesco's wins hands down, except for its deli counter, which blows, but the somerfield one is excellent biggrin morrison's is the devil btw. in my town when you walk in the first things you see are compost and the fish counter... who the fuck greets their customers with bags of dirt and stinking fish? where's the fresh food!? also, it's the only supermaret i've ever been in where the alcohol is at the front, they usually hide that right at the back. i think that says a lot about their target demographic.

sorry none of that was to do with wal-mart tongue
