Does anyone know anything about this? I need an AT&T enabled cellphone, long story, but I saw a sign in the window of some random, nameless wireless store the other day, that said "We unlock cellphones"!

I was wondering if anyone has ever had this done, and how legit it is, and if it works? I just need a new phone asap, and it would be much easier and quicker for me to just get any phone and have it unlocked, I think? But I don't really know.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. smile

i duno bout in the US but here in the UK its perfectly legal and pretty easy. Nokia phones juts require an unlock code which can be looked up on the internet (if you have the time). Most others require you to link to a computer then use some software to unlock.

Unbarring on the other hand is illegal. When a phone is stolen and reported it is black listed (using the imei number) with all the networks in that country , the only way it could be unbarred legally is if the owner told the police that they found it. It can be done but here in the UK you'l land yourself with £5000 fine and a sentence if you get caught.

So, erm, yes, if you wana use your phone/cell on another network then go get it unlocked.

I get a new phone every 6 months or so because I always want the new one that comes out or i get board with mine so I will call the company (ie: T-Mobile, Cingular, etc.) and let them know I got a new phone and was going to pass my old one on to my mom so can i get the unlocking code, usually it takes a day and then they email you this code that you just have to punch into the phone. Then I put it on Ebay and Make a bunch of money cause the phone is usually in Brand New Condition and Popular. Plus when their unlocked they can make you way more money cause they work with any company with SIM. So try calling your company or check this out:

I just bought a phone in the Ebay group here on SG, and its a Sony Ericsson and apparently, after much internet research have come to the conclusion, that is particular brand needs to have something done to the firmware or something, and just a code will not unlock it. So I think I may have to take it to some place to get it done, once the phone gets here.

But the phone I just bought is locked to Cingular, which is the company I have a contract with know, kinda, since AT&T was bought out by them, but I am still on an AT&T contract, so when I went to the Cingular store about getting a new phone, they told me to just get one on Ebay, since they no longer sell AT&T phones, so I wonder if I bring this phone to Cingular, if they will unlock it for me. Hmmmm...
