Sure daydreaming got you into a lot of trouble in your high school classes but who would have thought that it could lead to a degenerative brain disease?

Scientists who set out to explore changes in the brain as Alzheimer's disease progresses got a surprise: a possible link between daydreaming and the degenerative brain disease that robs memory, language and thought.

A new Washington University study shows the part of the brain used to daydream is the same where Alzheimer's disease develops — in some people — later in life. It suggests the normal brain activity of daydreaming fuels the sequence of events leading to Alzheimer's.

That's silly. Just because they're in the same place?

It would make more sense if not daydreaming led to brain deterioration...

The hell? Are we talking spacing out and being effectively oblivious to everything day dreams or using your imagination to replace the teacher with a giant reptilian monster and then setting ranks of can-can girls dancing on his head day dreams?

Umm, doesn't that actually suggest that that part of the brain is really important to us? Since fucking it up severely fucks us up?

I can't say I predicted this, but in hindsight it makes perfect sense, people with Alzheimers often seem unable to distinguish between reality and what's in their mind.

Personally, I think a person with a well developed daydreaming function, someone who exercises that muscle, will be in better shape for the future. But then again, I daydream a lot so what the fuck, I can only hope biggrin

Could this also mean that people who enjoy daydreaming will be less bothered by Alzheimer's disease if they get it?

All preliminary research will try to "suggest a link" with something. You got to at least look busy if you want grant money. "It suggests a new hypothesis and opens an avenue in exploration" Send more money!

The sample was 764, and I'd assume it was roughly divided by the 3 groups. That's not a generalizable sample. And they're not even long-term studies of the same people. correlation does not imply causation, etc etc. This stuff is by NO means conclusive, and it says so in the article.

"It remains to be seen whether there's a "real relationship" between the daydreaming part of the brain and Alzheimer's, he said."

I'm not going to worry just yet. I'm sure everything will be ok. Don't panic.

I would think the lack of daydreaming would lead to Alzheimers'. Let's face it, less and less people are engaged in creative thought these days and most people don't know how to daydream!

Yeah, and I saw heavy drinking is believed to lead to Alzheimer's, too. If both of these things are true, I might as well hang it up right now. Assuming I can find the hook to hang it on.

Hmm so now creative thought causes a serious degenerative mental disease, let's see how soon they start teaching this in schools to prevent the kids from, y'know, having any independent thought at all.
