...why do I feel like the king of the universe because I upgraded XP Home to XP Pro and my data remains intact?

Hmmm?

Just give it a few moments. The bugs take a little while to warm up.

Yeah but if you had to make some fundamental change to the operating system and it asked you to put in the Pro 200 Disc and reboot would you:

a) Just do it. Hey, BillG would never tell me to do something if it was going to dump 40Gb of assorted mp3s, movies, pictures and documents unceremoniously from the HDD without so much as a critical stop.

or

b) Back up everything, burn the most vital data onto CDs/DVDs and sweat copiously until the disc had finished violating your child?

See what I mean?

Second HDs for your "I need this" stuff, people. It's the only way to run Windows and has been since... sheesh, anything beyond Workgroups.

Linux??? No, no, no my friend. The only reason I've ever ran the program was for high end inventory and parts ordering platforms. I would not recommend that as a workstation OS to anybody.

Always back up everything. Digital data does not exist unless it's in two places.

And when I upgrade, I always wipe the drive completely. Overwriting the OS with a new one is begging to have your shit fall apart.

Besides, I keep all that crap on a file server across the way with mirrored drives that would keep humming even if my box melted down.

So yeah.

Oh, and *heart* 2000 pro. *heart* it to death.

I'm running Win2k Pro. And I back everything up on an external hard drive, and when I reinstall, upgrade, whatever; I format the drive first and go for a clean start.

I'm a recent Mac convert though. I'll be using a new Mac Powerbook in college again come September, and then hopefully purchasing my very own.
