A new report published today claims that flip-flop sandals, the beachy footwear worn by millions of people worldwide, could actually be hazardous to your health... in fact, they could kill you!

Three in every four motorists have admitted they find it hard to drive in flip flops and road safety experts have warned that wearing the sandals in the car could be a lethal decision.

Researchers claim a flip flop, worn by millions, can easily get stuck under the pedals and cause a fatal accident, The Sun says.

Craig Martin, spokesman for Norwich Union who carried out the poll, told the newspaper: "Footwear such as flip flops are dangerous as the sole can get caught under a pedal.

"The absence of ankle support can lead to the foot slipping off the pedal altogether."

Think you're safe just because you don't drive while wearing these sinister sandals? Think again!

The Sun also says that German researchers revealed last year that 14 out of 25 pairs of flip flops they studied contained toxic chemicals known to lower sperm count in men and attack the liver, kidneys and reproductive organs.

So remember, kids, for the good of all humankind, stop wearing flip-flops!

...flip flops [contain] chemicals known to lower sperm count in men and attack the liver, kidneys and reproductive organs.

The solution? Wear them on your feet.

Usually if I'm wearing flip flops I take 'em off while I drive...

I cannot fathom how people can wear flip flops anywhere besides the beach/pool. They're so damn uncomfortable and they leave your feet completely open to any numer of hazards.

Driving barefoot's illegal too (at least in Oregon and, I imagine, other places).

So at least 3/4 of the sample group of drivers have worn/do wear flip-flops? I hadn't realised that many guys were keen on them. biggrin

Ankle support is important? I suddenly feel much safer wearing New Rocks at the wheel, despite the occasional stomping down on both accelerator & brake at once in Ford Fiesta's...

So pretty much everyone in my state is gonna be sterile or dead. I doubt many people will shed a tear.

I've never understood the popularity of flip flops, they're the most uncomfortable things I've ever put on my feet.

What the hell? whatever

I've never had a problem driving with flip-flops (heels, on the other hand, take some getting used to), and I've never heard that it's illegal to wear them while driving. In fact, I believe I wore flip-flops when I took my driving test.
Wouldn't it be in the DMVs handbook if it was illegal?

How on earth could they make a statement like that about them causing health problems without going into more detail about what is actually causing the problems? There are so many different kinds of flip-flops, made out of different materials. To make a statement that broad just seems stupid and irresponsible.
Are they just trying to freak people out, or what? whatever
