Nasty people

I agree with Thistle. Ignore, they will get bored.

You be really polite to them. Lay it on like warm molasses. Don't give an inch, but be so damned nice about it that they get angry at themselves either because they're being mean to such a polite person, or because they're mad at themselves because they can't get a rise out of you. Speak slowly and evenly, but don't be condescending. Don't flush, don't ever raise your voice. The speak calmly and firmly no matter how hard they yell. Be a model of cool headed reasonableness that makes their raving seem all the more barbaric.

Be ready to dodge a punch.

Very close to what I was going to say..... Give a smile and tilt your head to the side and walk away.............. the smile says your ok and the tilt says you understand that yep that person is having a hard time. That way you get to walk away by making the person reflect upon themselfs...... I think?

Leave them to their bitter, pointless lives.

Yeah, being kind will piss them off and run them away. Don't argue/fight with them. That's what they want. I'm always sarcasticly nice but they don't know that. Usually they end up feeling like a dick. Mostly they ARE dicks. Oh well.

Make a voodoo doll of them and stab it. Kill their cat/parents/children.

Talk to your friends about it, bore your friends about it, turn it into a funny story, establish a code so you can be talking about the person by phone or IM even when they're present. That is your real life and the source of your dignity and perspective, so use it as a protective bubble and don't let the person monopolise your waking or sleeping attention. Inside that bubble you know damn well that you're already better than the person in question and aren't interested in beating them on their terms, so you'll find it much easier not to respond to provocation.
