definition:
1. Of, relating to, or having a sexual orientation to persons of the same sex.
2. Showing or characterized by cheerfulness and lighthearted excitement; merry.
3. Bright or lively, especially in color: a gay, sunny room.

nowhere do i see anything in the definition of gay for it to mean stupid or moronic or dim or whatever else people mean when they use it to degrade something. i cringe every time i see it used to demean. i was really hoping that people would think of the denotation of the word before using it in posts. i also hope once you think of how you are using it to belittle homosexuality whether you intend to or not and try to refrain from doing so. say what you mean and think of other peoples feelings.

I agree with you on this very much! I've got a good friend who is gay, and one of the funniest moments of my life was when we where hanging out at a local hobby store and this little 10 year old kid said "Man thats so gay!" (referring to something with the game) and James(my friend) Stood up and gave the kid that exact defination of the word and explaind to him how the word should be used! The look on that kids face after that was priceless, Here he is using this word probly never even actually met a real Gay man before, and probly got it from his moronic dad or something.

I totally agree. My little sister uses it around me all the time and it bugs the shit out of me.

It's like, oh, go ahead and use a word that describes the main component of what I am as a synonym for some other word that describes something really shitty. Fabulous.

I mean, I'm sure the people using the word gay in that context don't really stop and think "Mwa ha ha, i'm gonna use it in a hurtful way" but that's the way it turns out. *Sigh.*

More cheesy people trying to dictate what you should or shouldn't say... Is this a part of the PC camp?

For whats it worth:

Im not gay in the sexual sense of it. And i used to say "Thats gay" to things that sucked. But a friend of mine who is gay asked me, "You say 'gay' like its a bad thing". So i stopped for awhile. But it seems every last one of my friends says "Thats gay" to things that suck, so i picked up on it again. Im sorry it offends some people, but its just a popular word. Dont take it personally if you are gay, we dont mean that being gay is bad, its just a word, like any other word. It had double meanings.

I have a habit of using words for their effect rather than their literal meaning. So yes, if you're incredibly lucky you just might hear me say that something is indeed "gay". Does it have anything to do with homosexuality? No. At least, not in my head it doesn't.

I say plenty of things that apparently make other people cringe. Sometimes it's pretty funny though. Say someone fucks you over - call them every single mismatched derrogatory slur you've been taught never to say and watch them become so baffled that they don't know how to respond. Call that obnoxious, professional sounding male bill collector a "fat, four-eyed negroid dyke" and see what happens.

Okay, I've made enough friends here. Time for me to get some sleep.

apex, sorry you dont have the self control necessary to stop. it is just disturbing that it is okay to use in that context because it is popular.

Just because something is popular doesn't make it alright. It might explain the usage of the word, but doesn't excuse it.

I find myself saying it from time to time but I try not to. When I feel like calling people for their usage of it I usually say something like this
them: "My car is really slow, it's gay."
me: "yeah, the fact that your car is slow for sure is attracted to other facts of the same gender."
