what the hell is wrong with some of you?

no amount of heat from the summer sun is going to cause a manhole cover to be THAT HOT. use your damn brains. are you saying that the woman that was electrified by simply stepping onto a manhole just shouldn't have been stepping on it in the first place?

whatever

If something is hot enough to brand you and scar you for life, it's sure to be damned hotter than a regular manhole cover in summer. Most burns go away with time, but a brand has to be from a red hot piece of metal if it's going to last.

yeah, she sounds like a real asshole

This is basically what I was going to say, but she's much better at it. IT WAS AFTER MIDNIGHT. And you better be damn sure that if that happened to me, I'd fucking sue. And come on, free body mod? Are you kidding me?! A free body mod is when your buddy is a piercer and does it for free. This is something unfortunate that leaves her scarred for life, in a way that she didn't want.

I love that so many of you are here to defend the poor people at Con Ed. Guess what? The thing was too fucking hot and it burned her, scarring her for life. The week before, someone DIED because the wires under the manhole were stripped, and caused it to be electrified. This is all pure negligence on the part of ConEd.

Yeah, pitch black. In Manhattan. On 13th and 2nd. Brilliant.

I'm a tad more concerned about the woman who DIED thanks to one of their "electrified man-covers", but it's still pretty awful.

She has every right to sue, and if she doesn't win, I'd be pissed. The city fucked up and scared her for life. She's entitled to reparations.

Not to mention the fact that dogs get electrocuted here a lot (some die). They've taken to putting this epoxy/rubber-type stuff over all the manholes now.

Out of curiosity, why would a manhole cover have electricity running through it? I've never heard of that before.

I would have gotten in touch with the company and asked them to pay my medical bills. If they didn't, then I would have sued.

I would have also got in touch with someone from the city. To make sure they knew about it. I don't know who, but I wouldn't have figured it out.

Several dogs have been electrocuted in Boston over the past year or so as well.

Has anyone heard of this happening before last year? I've not read or heard any news about it before, but it's odd to think that this is a simultaneous and sudden development in large cities in the North East.

Thank you

This link goes to a page with lots of links to other Con Ed accidents, incidents, electrocutions, fires and deaths/injuries over the last few years. Note that some are duplicates, covering the same story.

Public Utility Law Project

Sorcha, the manhole cover that killed the woman in NY was electrified with stray voltage from an improperly insulated wire under it.

It's happened for a couple years, especially in neighborhoods (i believe) with old wiring. The salt that they put on the roads eats at the wires' casings.

In a city that gets that much snow and needs that much plowing, salting, etc, I wonder why they haven't switched over to something cheaper and less destructive, like spreading gravel and soil?

Anyway, I was wondering what happened to this girl. I'm glad to finally hear she's suing. If anything, it will hopefully force Con-Ed to put more focus on replacing aging infrastructure.

I don't get why everyone is so pissed off that she is suing, there is no way for a manhole cover to get hot enough to brand you from sitting in the sun.

Actually, it can. You can get a third-degree burn from a piece of metal that has been sitting in the noonday sun for less than 15 minutes in large parts of the US.
