DJ Liz Wallenburg was skateboarding when she fell onto a ConEd manhole cover, which was hot enough to brand her for life.

She is suing ConEd for damages as she didn't really want their logo permanently branded into her back.

"I landed with my arm and back straight onto the metal cover," Wallenberg said.
"I noticed it was kind of hot, but I didn't realize how bad it was until my skin started to sizzle."

[...]

"It was such awful pain," Wallenberg said. "There was blistering, and it was like I was branded. You can see the 'O' and the 'N' from 'Con Edison.' The doctor said a lot of this will scar for life."

Earlier, after the death of a girl by electrocution mere blocks from where this incident happened, ConEd checked out all of their manhole covers and declared them safe.

Gotta agree, I actually think it looks pretty neat. Not to say I wouldn't sue if it happened to me, but it is interesting. And one day, it'll make a damn fine story to tell people.

I love the climate of our civil justice system. She was skateboarding and fell on something hot. Chalk it up as a misfortune and move on. This spring I was skateboarding and fell because of a rut in the road. Did I sue the city? No...I went to the hospital.

Is this a joke? I don't get it. What makes you think she's a stripper?

Yeah, but you can't reasonably expect there to be electric manhole covers. Also, careful vigilance can not save you from an electric manhole cover, as they likely look the same as a non-electrified one.

You know, it's one thing when a manhole cover is faulty because of an electrical current running through it, and another when it's just red hot because of the heat.

Maybe she should consider suing the sun... wink

I didn't see anywhere in the article where it says what caused the manhole cover to be so hot.

Depending on how the scar heals, I would just have it modified into a tattoo.
According to her she already has many tattoos.

Exactly. The article doesn't say what heated the manhole cover. I'd agree that Con Ed would share a certain amount of responsibility of the burn were due solely to a malfunctioning electric device.

However....it's a friggin manhole cover. It's made of metal. The incident happened in August. Odds are, electricity. or not...the friggin thing was going to be hot

It covered a steam pipe. I've walked through steam on city streets before (by accident). That stuff is HOT. I can't imagine it being a metal cover in the middle of summer helped any, either.

2nd article says it was a steam conduit, so the utility company are culpable as it the external access shouldn't have been heated by leaking superheated steam.

this isn't as bad as when a steam pipe bursts underground and turns the ground above it into boiling quick and you fall into and boil to death... I have heard of it happening!
