Jolene Siana has serious guts. Not only did she send boxes of letters detailing her depression and self-injury to Ogre of Skinny Puppy in her late teens, fifteen years later, she's compiled them into a sincere, gut-wrenching, and deeply funny book called "Go Ask Ogre: Letters from a Deathrock Cutter". I spent some time with the very sweet Jolene recently and had to ask her a few questions about her incredible book.

"Go Ask Ogre: Letters from a Deathrock Cutter" will be out August 1st from Process.

You can buy Go Ask Ogre on Amazon or check your local bookstore. I hear it's being displayed prominently at a couple of Barnes & Nobles (if you're into that sort of thing) in, like, Glendale and stuff, too.

Jolene's on SG as LittleRedWriter.

The *Go Ask Ogre* book release party
in Silverlake was a hit!
Much love & respect go out to Jolene....
.....what a woman.

I cried over the filmstrip - a musical gallery of old concert tickets, family, ex boyfriends, hard times & hair fotos from the past to support the book....
it was touching. Love you Jolene! I can't put down your book today.
thankyou for what you've shared with the world.......

IT'S HANDS DOWN MY FAVORITE BOOK IN YEARS.
VERY SPECIAL.

Excellent interview Flux! I'm going to have to get the book. I've always hated books about depression and mental illness that sounded like tesimonials for a product or a certain doctor. This sounds different.

Jolene - you are amazing! Such an eloquent interview... thanks to both you and Flux for sharing this with us.

My friend Krista urged me to drop by your journal and say hello - and I was utterly delighted to find that you had also provided today's interview!

I already hold you in great esteem and cannot wait to read your book. smile

Interesting book, cool author, insightful questions. Huzzah!

Now if only I could stop making stupid little jokes to myself about "self-abuse."

I loved the answer concerning psychiatric treatment. having been a product of that world in my childhood and early teens, I agree that the pill culture isn't always the wisest and most helpful way of dealing with mental illness.

I like Jolene's response to the question of self-abuse and why kids do it and her awareness that reading about it can be a trigger. I agree that medication can help some people but not everyone.

Keep the interviews coming Flux.

haven't read the book but i plan to as soon as i can scrape together enough cash for it. i do have to say based on what i've heard that it sounds amazing. and it will probably make me look like a tool for saying it, but how classy is nivek ohgr for 1)corrosponding with jolene , 2)saving, and later returning her letters, and 3)giving his blessing to the book. i can't imagine many artists would show that kind of empathy for a fan.

Thanks to Flux for the great interview. The book sounds really interesting. Has anyone read it, yet? I'd like to give it to someone very close to me who used to self-cut. Do you think it might trigger them?

Btw, not meaning to disappoint Ms Siana, but I definitely remember reading that "Go Ask Alice" has long been proven to be entirely fictional (not to say fraudulent). (edit: and here's where. I hated the book when we had to read it at school - now I know why... *yuck*)

You should do more of the interviews around here, being able to string a cohesive sentence together correctly is an underrated talent these days. Well done.

ogre seems like a real accessible, and popular guy.
I'm not really on the scene, the scene that orge is on,
but I hear more stories about people and ogre, than anyone else that might be his equal.
I don't even really know what his music sounds like, i think back in high school someone made me listen to some while we were on acid, but I have heard alot about ogre.
Ogre is for the children, this is good.
