It seems that Hunter S. Thompson's ongoing and final wish was to have his remains cremated and shot from a 150 ft. cannon. Apparently Johnny-boi has permission from the family to do so, and the funds to back it. He was on the Tonight Show last night, and said that the project was in its initial stages and would be executed in the very near future. God blees 'im. That's friendship.

Opinions or comments on Depp or Thompson in general.
HST got the idea back in the 70s, and enlisted his buddy Ralph Steadman to design it and such
Since Depp was good friends with HST (Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas), he's helping the family fulfill the Good Doktor's last request. It's supposed to be a private function at Thompson's compound in Woody Creek, Colorado (right outside Aspen) on August 20th (last time I checked).
The cannon is to be set inside a 100 ft. tall stone version of the Gonzo fist, which is to then be set upon a 50 ft. pedestal.
oh my god. Am i going to have to link you to the comment in THIS FRIGGIN THREAD where I already posted the link to the newstory. Learn to use the built in search function in your eyes, dude
There was actually a documentary in the 70's that shows him going through the process of picking it out, even while I was watching it I was thinking, "Man he must have changed his mind by the time he died"...and then I see this.
It's amazing that as long as you can do one thing well enough...then you free to go completely nuts.

that's on the criterion collection release of the fear and loathing dvd.
I think that's really cool that Johnny Depp is helping Thompson's family to honor his request. It's a bizarre request that may not have gotten fulfilled if it weren't for Depp's financial backing. I think it's a neat tribute to a fantastic writer.
This is off the Hunter S. Thompson subject, but still on Johnny Depp- I watched a "Behind the Scenes of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" today on E, and Johnny Depp really does seem like he's a very loyal, dedicated person when it comes to his friends. Just the way he spoke of Tim Burton, and the little boy playing Charlie (who was also in Finding Neverland), it made me think that he hadn't let his fame get to his head so much that he forgot the value of a friend.
That's why I am not surprised that he is helping make Thompson's last wish come true.

Once it is built I will make a pilgrimage to such a monument.
