Multi-colored hair

I tried out the search. No luck.
So here goes:
I heart hair dye. I've tried blue (my favorite), red, and purple.
I have some left over purple from ages ago, and I'm thinking I might try doing a combination of purple and orange. (Any other suggestions as well?)
I've seen girls with really nice color combinations and different styles, but I've no idea how to go about dying my hair with two colors and not have it come out like poo.
Also, up for debate, how should I combine the colors? Chunks of both strewn about my head, one color layered over the other, mostly one color with bangs of the other color?
Could I possibly use the word color more frequently?

Ask Al. At one point she had the best smooth fade of a dye job I have ever seen. It went from bright orangey-red to bright yellow. She might have some pointers.
