Eyes of Laura purports to be a website and weblog of life as seen through the eyes of a Vancouver-based female security guard. "Sometimes I wonder if more happens," Laura wonders, "because I am watching," in a multimedia display of Laura walking, talking, and watching. Except the truth of the matter is that the site and the woman are both artistic creations born out of the mind of artist Janet Cardiff. The New York Times explains in "When Seeing Is Not Always Believing."
One aspect of the site does retain its magic long after the Laura illusion shatters. And that is the surveillance camera. It's a real one. It shows what is going on in real-time at the Vancouver Art Gallery. And it gives the viewer complete control. Here is your chance to be Laura, the security guard with her eyes on the camera and her mind on crime. (Indeed, you have to log in as Laura to gain control of the camera.)
