doesn't this sort of depend on what kind of computer you own?

and your headphones. Some only go so loud without blowing or sounding like crap.

Windows?

Okay.. You have the following controls:

-In whatever media player you're using (Winamp, Windows media player, realplayer, whatever)

-At the right corner of your taskbar, there should be a little speaker icon. If not, go into your control panel and go sounds and audio devices or something like that (don't know what version of windows you have).. There should be a volume tab.

-On your cd rom itself, sometimes there is a (manual) volume control.. That only works if you're plugged into that jack.

Many PCs (computers that are not made by Macintosh) have a volume control knob somewhere on the outside of the computer. This could be on the monitor, the speakers, the keyboard even.

You may also have an on-screen volume control. I'm afraid I don't remember where this might be in Windows.

Your PC may also not have a very good sound card and/or speakers in which case you just won't be able to get much volume. Most computer sound systems do not get as loud as conventional stereos.

Assuming you're running Windows, go to Start>Programs>Accessories>Entertainment (or multimedia or something, depending on your version)>Volume Control.

Failing that, Start>Run and type in sndvol32.

Then whack the 'Volume Control' and 'Wave' (and 'CD Player' if you're listening to a CD) up.

BTW...I am a technological mongoloid, so I am looking for an answer like, "click this, then click this, see this? click it...etc."

wink

the volume slider you get when you left click on the speaker icon gives you a master volume control for all types of sounds that are generated in your computer.

if you right click on the speaker icon you can go to "open volume control". turn up the volume for WAVE. this is effectively controlling the volume of wave files generated by your computer.

if this doesn't help then it would require additional hardware to get your eardrums and brain properly ruptured.

I am not just being whiney and I am not deaf. It really isn't very loud compared to plugging into my home stereo.

Computers do not usually come from the store equipped to be very loud like home stereos. You may want to invest in a better sound card.

You said the volume is maxed out on the little speaker icon... that's the main volume. You may want to check the volume settings for the audio playback device itself. On Windows 2000 (what I'm using), you get there like this (it'll be similar on other versions of Windows):

Start Menu> Settings > Control Panels > Sounds and Multimedia > Audio tab

Click on the "Volume" button for the Sound Playback device and fiddle with the options there. On Windows XP, I think there's an audio wizard you can use, but I'm not on that box right now.

Have you tried a different media player? Or ditching your headphones and getting a decent set of speakers?

You could always just reformat. Or get a better computer, or even just burn it to cd and use your stereo. tongue

another easier option is to get some good quality external speakers for the computer. They plug into the headphone jack.

I got mine for 30 bucks from target

you can even get speaker and subwoofer combos for like 10-15 bucks more

I wish I was home where my digital camera and volume knob are.

I run directly from a soundcard with 1/4 jacks to powered monitors, which unfortunately only have 'sensitivity' knobs in the back, no real volume control to speak of.

SO, software was my only volume control, until I bitched about this to my friend Lyle who is an electronics tech.

He made me a device which is a lot like those volume controls on the cord of a mobile device, little things that cut the volume going through the cord.

EXCEPT mine is the size of a trade paperback, all brushed steel, with this awesome knob (logarithmic not linear potentiometer as well).

It's the dopest, sickest, most awesome volume knob ever.

Lyle rules.
