OLD SKOOL

JUL 05, 2005 11:31 AM

I just wanted to get folk's opinions on a scenario...
A group of friends go out for an evening and have some drinks. When one bar closes, the group decide to move on to a club, but two of the people (who are engaged and live together) have to go home. One of the friends (who is drunker than any of the others) then tries to drag the girl (half her size) down the street, so she then grabs onto a lamp post so as not to move, but the friend keeps pulling (if she loses her grip, the fall would be injuring) In the end, her fiance slaps the friend's wrist (with an open hand) so she has to release his fiance. The friend then doesn't understand why they are both pissed off at her...
Who's in the wrong here?
[Edited to add]
How would you have handled the situation if someone was trying to drag your s.o down the street?

I think you can safely assume that 90% of the answers are going to be the same as the two above. Did she just not understand why they were mad at the time or still doesn't get it now when she is (oresumably) sober? It just sounds like the kind of thing people might get upset about when drunk and be embarassed about when they sobered up.

I'm trying to imagine another possible answer to this...

The drunk friend was in the right. The alcohol had cleared his head enough to know what you sober people didn't; that girl needed to go down there, even at the cost of her own body.

umm... let me see if I understand this. A and B, who live together, need to go home. C, who is the drunkest in the group, decides she doesn't want them to leave. So C grabs B and physically drags her down the street, until A slaps C's hand to make her let go. Is that right?

In that case, yeah, C is completely in the wrong. If, when she's sober, she still doesn't understand why everyone's mad at her, she's either immensely stupid or insane.

I had a feeling this was what people would think, but just wanted to get some opinions from people... The drunken friend has not yet been seen again by the engaged couple, but they are the sort of person that would think that being drunk should excuse their actions, and that it was wrong they were slapped (once on the wrist with an open hand) by a man...

I hate the "I was drunk" excuse. So much. And I am a mean drunk. I do nasty evil things. But I know this about myself. So I take responsibility. Or don't get drunk.

The drunk excuse is bullshit. Nothing you do is ok, just because you're drunk and didn't know better. At the same time, anybody who's done something drunk and stupid knows that they're in no place to judge. Since the situation in hand, oddly enough, has the drunk one pissed, then she's wrong on both accounts.

The fiance was in the right to slap the wrist of the other girl
(I think that's what you asked?)

The drunk girl is in the wrong, but if she was just being silly then the couple shouldn't be so mad and should chill out. That's a lame thing to be all pissed about, in my opinion.

Also, if you didn't say "No, seriously, we're going" and just slapped her then you're a dick. Hopefully that was your last resort.

Sorry, you said 'the friend' so many times that I gost lost and thought the friend was a guy.

So what if he slapped her wrist? She was out of line, drunk people need strong pointers sometimes.

It was beyond sillyness, as the fiance was clinging to the lamp post and yelled 'help', because she did not want to go, but the other friend was twice her size and able to physically drag her...

There were warnings, and it was a last resort...

The drunk friend is the [female] fiance's manager, so she is concerned about any consequences at work.

You know the only way to solve this don't you?

A fight to the death.

Whomever survives, was obviously the injured party in this given scenario, and whomever dies, was obviously at fault.

drunkeness is no excuse for anything, alcohol only lets you act the way you want to without considering anything or anyone. i had a girlfriend who every week embarrassed herself mightily when drunk, and the next day would be all " i can't believe i did that! i was so drunk!" it was a justification to make acting like an ass at everyone else's expense okay. oh, you grabbed that guy's ass at the bar? it's because you wanted to grab his ass and the drink allowed you to. YOU did it. the sauce did not. argh. mad
