Another high school teacher resignation scandal. What was it this time? Sex with 15 year-old sophomores? Throwing chairs at snoozing students? No. Michael Kay, a former social studies teacher at Benjamin Cardozo High School resigned while under investigation for using his sick days to work as a pro-wrestler with the WWE.

According to investigators, Kaye told school officials he was taking the sick days in December and February to care for an ill sister, and he sometimes provided doctors' notes. They said they later discovered that his wrestling web site listed him as being on tour for World Wrestling Entertainment on those days.

Kaye's site lists him as Matt Striker, saying he has also performed under names including Matt Martel and Hydro, part of a tag team called Los Lunatics.

Kaye, who explained that he did not know "sick days" and "personal days" were different things was hoping that by repaying the money he was issued during those sick days he would earn a chance at getting his job back. Needless to say he was more than miffed at Special Investigator Richard Condon, who recommended the school did not rehire him:

"I would have been better off beating a kid, because those teachers always seem to keep their jobs."

To change the subject:

Benjamin Cardozo High School? You don't say... I just saw that name occur at TPM Cafe, and learned he was the first Latino SC justice. Albeit, one whose relations came over from The Netherlands (which were part of the Spanish empire), and not Mexico nor Honduras, nor Peru, nor [insert other Lat. Am. state]. Just interesting, is all.

Also: while I see that the crack news-team at SG world hq has Talking Points Memo hyperlinked on the news page, there is nothing for TPM Cafe, which is a distinct site. And, while linked from Talking Points Memo, might be easier for some -- if not all -- of the membership to find if a separate link at SG News existed.

He said he had good relationships with his students and many of them did well on their examinations "because I taught them!"

THIS is what the school board SHOULD be worried about. There is an extreme shortage of good teachers. If he's teaching effectively, and the students are actually learning, then WTF difference does it make what this guy does in his free time???

While I agree that there is a shortage of teachers, the point was that it wasn't his free time. Look closely at the quoted article and see that he used sick days and doctors notes to say he was taking care of his "sick sister". That is where the problem came up.

When I was in high school there was a teacher who took sick days for when the new star wars movies came up. He was starwars nerd/asshole. He still has his job, so this guy should still have his.

i agree. the issue is that he is using sick days.

BUT, in all honesty, i just think the school board is trying to railroad him because of his side job. He offered to pay the money back.
