(stolen from my journal, because i want more responses tongue)

Poll:

both of the following statements are incorrect. which one sounds worse to you?

a) "my clothes need washed" or "my room really needs cleaned" (missing 'to be')

b) "i'm done my book" or "i'm done class" (missing 'with')

i realize that both probably sound awful. but if you can deem one of them even a little bit worse than the other, that would be rad.

B sounds more caveman like to me, so I have to go with that one as being worse.

B sounds a lot worse. I actually hear people say things like A all the time. not that that makes it any better tongue

To me "A" sounds worse because you can't tell whether the person left out the verb or didn't conjugate the verb properly (i.e. did he mean "my room needs cleaning?"

B sounds much worse. As Peggy said, that is just caveman-speak.
Surface, you flappy headed Canadians with your beady little eyes don't know what you are talking aboot. wink

B is much more ridiculous. If I heard someone say that I wouldn't be able to keep a straight face.

Another Canadian vote for A being (much) worse.

To me, B sounds okay. Not *correct*, but nowhere near awful.

make that canada voting solid A...

B sounds like everyday, colloquial bad grammar. and i mean, technically it should be "i am finished (with) my book" or "i am finished (with) class," because 'done' isn't really the right word for those sentences. but people say "i'm done my book" all the effing time.

at least in canada, we do... whatever

That's exactly what I was thinking. B is horrible, but A is infuriatingly horrible, because at least with B you can just mentally insert the omitted words and fix the sentence. You can't do that with A. Instead, it's frustrating because there's more than one way to fix it.

"i'm done my book" or "i'm done class" (missing 'with') is okay. Atleast when you're talking to your book or class...
Missing a comma in that case, but who cares about commas anyway?

interesting, interesting.

some of you would never want to hear me speak tongue

i'm from a small town in northwestern, pa. i grew up saying 'my hair needs cut,' 'my clothes need washed' etc, and, in all seriousness didn't even know it was wrong until i came to college and my roommate said 'what did you just say?' and proceeded to laugh at me. i then realized, though, that a bunch of people from the philadelphia area who i know leave out the word 'with,' which i think sounds worse.

apparently i'm just biased, and i, in the end, sound dumber. ah, well tongue

I've heard A before. I think it's a common-ish coloquialism.

So don't blame me, I voted for B.
