Yes. It's called "WHY ARE YOU STILL USING INTERNET EXPLORER, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD."

Also download Ad-Aware.

i like spybot search and destroy, or Spyware doctor. Cause sounds like you've got spyware/adware on your comp.

I could almost swear that even the newest version of Internet Explorer has a built in pop-up blocker. Go to www.windowsupdate.com and download all that stuff.

She wants to get rid of popups without changing anything? I hate to break it to you, but your roomate may very well be dumb.

Firefox (comes with a google taskbar). Spybot Search and Destroy. Spyware Blaster. Addaware. Problems all solved, and then some.

Yes even shitty IE comes with a pop blocker. Do what Kieth said, and turn on automatic updates for Windows.

Opera is another really good Web browser. It has lots of handy features built right in (unlike Firefox), like mouse gestures and the oh-so-wonderful quick download (great for downloading thousands of fonts or images - for freaks like me tongue).

Anyway, as was already mentioned, Firefox is a great alternative to IE (I use Firefox as my default Web browser.), but it certainly lacks in built-in features. Yes, it's endlessly expandable through use of plug-ins, but - depending on what sort of functionality you're going for - it isn't exactly for everyone. For instance, I find all of Firefox's mouse gesture plug-ins to be pretty crappy in comparison to the built-in mouse gesture functionality in Opera.

If you do happen to choose to remain an IE users, however, do yourself a favor and install Windows XP Service Pack 2, then enable the automatic updates (as mentioned above). However, I'd also consider using Spybot to get rid of any existing spyware, as well as to immunize your system against known threats.

no. this recently happened to me

i contracted some foul shit where, even after i downloaded and set my preferences to firefox, i still got vicious pop ups. half a dozen every several minutes, from IE. windows XP won't let you uninstall IE, and like someone already mentioned, IE has terrible inbuilt pop up prevention.

i use f-secure anti-virus 2005. i don't think you have spyware problems, i think you have a virus

If you want to completely uninstall Internet Explorer (with the exception of minor components used in the explorer shell), check out XPlite. Works like a charm. Just be forewarned that some antivirus software requires Internet Explorer for complete functionality. For instance, Norton Antivirus seems to require Internet Explorer (or at least some part of it) in order to perform automatic updates, as well as basic client updates.

I use NOD32, though, so I don't experience problems if I happen to uninstall Internet Explorer. I have Internet Explorer on my computer right now, though, since I need to test my Web site in all three major Web browsers for Windows. Also, my secondary computer has Internet Explorer on it, mainly because I'm trying to set up a Dreamcast-to-PC connection that I'm still not familiar with at the moment. I'm not really sure whether or not it requires Internet Explorer or not, so I figure I'll just keep it on there.

I've definitely heard great things about Spy Sweeper. It's the best paid spyware control software, but I still prefer Spybot, as it's free and has never let me down.

All you really need to buy is Windows (I prefer 2000, personally.), then use something like XPlite to uninstall all of the garbage. Honestly, the only commercial software (besides the obvious Windows) on my PC is Nero, NOD32, and Opera, as well as my lovely Photoshop. Otherwise, I use nothing but open-source software.

Equipping a Windows PC with the necessary software is nowhere near as expensive as most people believe it to be.

Is your pal running upto date anti-virus software, with a firewall, and with some anti spyware anti adware software?

And when you say "pop up", what kind of pop up do you mean? Because ifit's messenger service spam then your pal's pc is probably fux0red.

If it's the messenger service spam, his PC is far from "fux0red". It's very easy to disable that from the Control Panel.
