Anyone else get out of the military. I did a few months ago and I am having trouble adjusting to the different life style. The biggest thing for me is I got a job at Home Depot and I just feel like I am wasting my life, that I am not doing anything good. Besides the fact that I am not making enough to pay my bills. I just feel like I am going no where, I work all the time so I can't go out and meet anyone, even if I had the time to go out I have no money. I have been sending out my resume everywhere and I haven't gotten any offers yet. frown I just wanted a nice job where I was doing some good for people or the enviroment and go have a normal social life. Start dating again and hell I am almost 30 I would like to settle down.

I've never been in the military, but I thought I would stop by and plug the SG military group. There are probably a ton of people there who can relate. Hope things start looking up. Best of luck.

What branch and what type of work did you do?

I got out last September, and I had a bit of trouble finding my current job. As well as adjusting to civilian life. If you email your resume to me through my contacts tab, I can help beef it up for you. I did it for several friends when we got out, and we've all got good jobs now.

I had the same problem for a while (this was a long time ago...) I was in S.O.TG and other things. I am still uncomfortable sitting in public spaces with my back exposed..however you deal. Remember that the only thing that changed is that you are now a civilian. Granted a veteran but look on the bright side no more inspections. Seriously though i feel ya and it will be hard. If you were a Marine, Semper Fi, and if not that is cool we all serve in our own way. smile

Another good group, if you were a Marine or Corpsman at least.

I know what you are going through...as far as the hard time finding work part...I enjoyed myself on unemployment for a few months before I started working at FedEx though. I sent out lots of applications and got nothing back...FedEx was actually my last resort.
Loading those trucks kicked my ass even more than I had anticipated and I was only working part-time. The only reason I lasted as long as I did was because many people doubted I would even make it past two weeks.

Anyhow some nights on that job seemed harder than being in the Army. And I wasn't a pencil pusher, I was a mechanic. I quit that job and moved back in with my parents because I was also going through a divorce. I thought having a military background would do me good on resumes and finding a job in NYC would be a breeze. Boy was I wrong. frown

All that talk about veterans being given preference appears to be just lip service in my eyes. But I hear it does come in handy if you are looking for a government job....have you tried looking at anything along those lines?

I myself would look for jobs in Iraq, Kuwait, and Afghanistan, if I was fresh out of the military. Pretty good money and NO TAXES. Through KBR/Halliburton. Being an honorably discharged vet is an easy screening process for them.

everytime I get off active duty....as soon as I have to go back to regular work...I feel lost and start seriously considering going back to active duty. like I am right now.

getting back from Iraq and going from infantry work to just chilling and dealing with normal people in normal situations...it took a while...is taking a while.

First thanks everyone, second I was in the navy and I worked on computers and telecommunications. Right now I just don't feel like I am doing any good, I look back at all the times my ship was floating around the persian gulf tracking smugglers from Iraq and boarding the ships. Even though that was really hard work at the end of the day I felt like I did some good.

Funny. My sister and her husband both got out of the US Navy, and he is working at guess where (Home Depot). They have a child, so it's hard to pursue a degree. It really is fucking sad how little future security you have getting out of the military.

I'm not ex-military. They prefer ex-military. I would love to work over there. I've worked remote locations before. Everyone hates it, but I didn't hate it as much as most of them.

And he's worked in the region before, so................

He could have gone to college while in. When I was in basic training a few of the drill sergeants were taking courses at the local community college.

A buddy of mine is back there again with a Blackwater-esque security company. He's making some damn good money. I'm debating doing the same, but I honestly hate that fucking place, and shooting people sucks more than anything you can imagine.
