Ok no I didn't, but I want to. Smoking that is. I smoke a pack a day, and I'm starting to think I should quit, I'm sure there are people around here who have successfully quit smoking so if you can recommend techniques, therapies, drugs, whatever, I'd like to hear it.
Also, if you successfully quit were there side effects? Weight gain? Irritability (that lasted longer than a few days?)
Educate me, and distract me from all the whacked out contentious threads on the boards today.
although quitting smoking was nothing compared to when I quit chewing a can of Copenhagen a day after I graduated highschool....that shits worse than heroin.
If you wanna do it for real, then you can. I quit cold-turkey, but also did the following:
a. Pound water - all the time.
b. Satisfy my oral fixation thru sunflower seeds, gum, candy, etc. I did gain weight, but for me that is far from a problem.
c. Let your associates know you are quitting and that you will be irritable. I was cranky for a good three weeks, so be prepared for that.
d. Make a list of all of the pros of quitting in big red ink, and put it on your, um fridge with a magnet. You wil find that the list is quite long and quite substantial.
e. Avoid traditional smoking activities (very tricky for me, as being awake was a traditional smoking activity) for the first week or two. You will know when you can resume those activities.
f. Revel in the withdrawl, as it is your body fixing its self. I withrew hard, so also be prepared for that.

it's all about state of mind... i tried a few times found it impossible, but then instead of thinking about smoking you think about how good u feel NOT smoking. Carry a list of reasons why you gave up where u keep your fags (including stuff like how lame it is to be controlled by there dried plants, trapped, imprisoned... not having to hope a girl u wanna chat to in a club smokes too etc etc)
ultimately patches etc, they wont work, the only way you can stop is to STOP. lemme find a picture that'll scare u out of it too, its a nasty
also if u have the right state of mind it really is piss easy, i smoked 20 a day for 6 years
I started smoking again last month after nearly two years of not, it feels amazing but now i have to do all that giving up crap again.
I was a seriously heavy and committed smoker first thing in the morning until just before sleep for nearly 10 years. There was no way on earth i could have gone cold turkey and those patch things made me feel funny. I started to smoke my first cigarette later and later in the day no matter how much of a craving I had, it started off half an hour after getting up, then an hour and so on until I wasn't having a cigarette until about 10pm and then I was forcing myself just for the nicotine fix. It took about 6 months but I quit, I then banned myself from cigarette inducing activities for example going to the pub and I ate a hell of a lot of sweets instead. I was also pretty vile to be around there was many a time when my boyfriend at the time tried to force me to smoke just to stop be from being such a grouch.
It was the only way I could have done it and like a twat I ruined it by starting again *lights a Marlboro*
Anyway that was my method, not recommended for everyone
It's funny....i think the hardest part is SERIOUSLY deciding to quit. Making the choice that you really REALLY want to quit. Otherwise you'll just torture yourself. Another funny part i figured out is that
it's you
working against you
for you.
We are so complicated. I've also heard from alot of different sources that it goes in three's. The third day is ROUGH, the third week is ROUGH, third month is so-so, & the third year i've yet to get to. I really am the happiest about it when i first wake up in the morning and don't have to cough up a shit ton of grossness . It is so worth it and it only gets easier with time. Also you kind of have to avoid all smoker friends and possibly drinking for a little while. Hermit style.

Good luck!
That actually sounds like a good method. My cravings are lowest in the morning. So if I just pushed them back and pushed them back, I could see that working. Once I have the first one of the day....I'm finished.
Listen. Make yourself vomit when smoking cigarettes a couple times. Train your brain to conditionally associate cigarette smoke with vomit. It will work, if you can do it.

I have an incredibly resistant gag reflex. I almost never puke even if I want to. So that might not work.

Well it worked pretty well for me. Once I had got myself over the initial cigarette thing I actually became slightly apprehensive of having my first of the day and getting that delightful/awful nicotine rush. It's about retraining your brain out of the habit rather than anything else and the gradual cutting it down does that.

Wow...you had seizures, muscle cramps, puked on yourself, and shit yourself? That's what happened to me the last time I kicked dope. That must've been some mighty strong snuff.

Try to find something else to associate it with. Hardwire it into your brain, man.
i did the cold turkey thing and it worked. i first tried the gum, and it didnt work. and i really started like the gum, alot, even though it tasted like ass. takes some will power to quit, and you really have to want it. cant go about it half assed. my main thought was, after the shitty first 2 weeks, i didnt want to smoke or cheat because it would mean it was all done in vain. kept me going. the mental addiction and habit of holding a cigarette and having to smoke in traffic and after eating was tough to get used to, but you do eventually. and i didnt gain weight because i just cant gain weight. lucky like that
