Someone earning £80,000 per year can afford a £4 cleaning bill. Maybe someone else was responsible, but chasing them for the tiny amount of cash is probably a bad idea.
(Login: sgnews / sgnews)

Mr Phillips earns a reputed £80,000 a year, while Ms Amner earns about £25,000. The average profit share of a partner, one step up from senior associate, is £364,000.

“Dear Jenny,” he wrote. “I went to the dry-cleaners at lunch and they said it would cost £4 to remove the ketchup stains.” He wrote that it would be “much appreciated” if he could have the money back.

He's probably going to regret sending that email. She replied; copying in everyone on her floor.

Ms Amner replied: “I must apologise for not getting back to you straight away but due to my mother’s sudden illness, death and funeral I have had more pressing issues than your £4.” She went on: “I apologise for accidentally getting a few splashes of ketchup on your trousers. Obviously your financial need as a senior associate is greater than mine as a mere secretary.”

I hope he feels like the arsehole he is and that he's apologised and sent her some nice flowers.

There is no sympathetic character in this story.

He's too petty to just let it slide and take the outcome (whether she ponies up or not) as a sign of her character.

She's an idiot for getting so bent out of shape about being held accountable for her actions (while making about 1.5 times what I do in my relatively comfortable position).

Yeah, what he said. The e-mail didn't strike me as rude or anything and his actions were justified.

Maybe the lawyers an asshole, I don't know, but I'm pretty sure that secretary's a bitch.

Who demands £4 compensation for an honest accident from anyone they want to remain friendly with, regardless of their salary?

I doubt very much that she stained his shirt on purpose.
He should have let it slide.

I agree its a cheap ass thing to do BUT it was just as bad if not worse of her to be so whiney about it.

Who would get upset for being told it would be "much appreciated" if they paid the 4 euros to cover something that was their fault anyway? There are several ways of looking at it and the above information is all we have to go on.

Without knowing exactly how the ketchup got on his pants it is hard to determine who is being the asshole here.

Anyone else find it hilarious that we're basically having a session of water-cooler gossip about two people we'll never know at a company we don't work at? I mean, seriously, ketchup and £4..

When it comes from a superior, "much appreciated" seems to carry with it "..or you're fired", doesn't it?

Aggreed on this one.

But, I do have to say that was a faux pas on her part to CC/BCC everyone else in the company... she might keep her job... but you can bet she won't be seeing any bonus/raises/promotions for quite some time.

And frankly, doesn't matter if it was 4, or 400... if it is someone else's fault... they should pay.

But, that's me.

That was a pretty fun read.

She comes in from a funeral, and the first thing on her to-do list is covering the cost of the clean.

Oh yeah, I got an answer for you...

"Dear boss, you are absolutely correct. I was inconsiderate not to ask for a quote for your drycleaning before I left for my mother's funeral. I realize the financial hardship that you must have been going through for the past several days over the 4 pounds. I am repaying this with 'interest'."

That was a very American response for someone who claims to be from Canada... whatever

I'm just saying that Americans tend to react to these situations in a certain way. We're a very sue-happy country, no? Watch People's Court someday. Accidents happen, move on with your life.

maybe he was making her serve him fishsticks and he's like "Put some ketchup on my sticks bitch!" And she splashes a lil and he's like "You gonna pay for that". plus i think euros are worth more than dollars so 4 might be like 560,097 dollars.

I like the part of the article where someone commented, "this chap should emigrate". Yes, or just wash his trousers and learn some tact. Whichever's easier.
