This only strengthens my theory that his "tattoos" are really just scented marker pictures, and glued on Shrinky Dinks.

Yeah, if by "really funny" you mean "insanely stupid." :p

Also "an insult and absolute mockery of all that 'riot grrl', and, by extension, punk rock, ever meant."

riot grrl was a fad, comparing it to punk rock is a bit much

By the same criteria by which you just judged 'riot grrl', punk was a "fad" too.

yea but punk wasnt lame.
and more importantly, punk had a huge impact on almost all music that came afterwards

and where would good charlotte be without riot grrl? what a sorry downward spiral of good taste!

I remember seeing a sign with the word "ROIT" on it. Sadly, I think the sign was a hand-out, because I saw it at other tapings of WOW (that's Women of Wrestling, not to be confused with the related and also defunct GLOW, or Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling).

Prime examples are Bikini Kill, Sleater Kenney, Le Tigre, stuff like that?

Huggy Bear, Heavens to Betsy, Excuse 17, Team Dresch?

I was obsessed with the stuff as a teenager, and now I can't stand most of it. What happened?

yeah. i feel you. i still like Bikini Kill and Team Dresch. in small doses, of course. smile

Music was the medium, but not the message.

But, at least in execution, the music was somewhat less confused than the message.

True.

It's also important to remember when this "movement" took place. At the time, grunge had just broke (and it's hard to remember now just how big and transforming that was), and the big media companies were looking anywhere for the "next big thing" and decided that "riot grrl" was going to be it, despite the fact that neither the music nor the message were anything but embryonic. By pinning all the hype on it, the movement was killed (whether or not it had any staying power in the first place is another matter).

That last picture is really cute. blush

What?! Hilary Duff is adorable.

The Le Tigre/Pais Hilton thing isn't true, right? It would be pretty funny if she started calling herself a riot grrrl.

I agree that the Newsweek, Time, Sassy (what the fuck happened, Jane?), etc. coverage completely diluted it into irrelevancy, but I also think that they sort of ghettoized themselves by playing ring around the rosie to an ajbect careerist punk rocker. I mean, what sort of punk rock movement can you have when somebody like Jessica Hopper feels the need to "quit" and Kathleen Hanna actually calls for a press moratorium? Something very authoritarian developed in the riot grrl community that made me uncomfortable with it, but I was also too young to really be aware of everything that was going on.

Yeah, but imagine if the young Ian McKaye had the press hounding him about "straight-edge" during Minor Threat's infancy. Riot Grrl always seemed like the flip side to that authoritarian coin.

Keith, I am glad you said what you did... it made me happy to hear you defending this.
and it made me sad to hear hear Riot Grrl being called lame. But I think lots of things are lame. Like Good Charlotte. So people would be sad to hear that I am sure. But still, I have much fondness for Riot Grrl, and of course everything that comes with it. It is true I am a feminist at heart.

I'm with you there. I used to love this stuff but it's a little hard (and by that I mostly mean boring) to listen to now. But I think it might just be that weird cyclical thing that seems to happen to a lot of music--it sounds dated and boring now, but in 5-10 years or so it'll be ripe for rediscovery (or, in DrStinkypants's case, for oddly venomous backlash).
