I was in my writing class last night and someone mentioned Riot Girls in class. I wasn't sure what they were and they couldnt give me a good definition in class. So I am asking, who are/were they. Any General information would be helpful and pics too.

Thanks

1. riot girl
1. A phrase describing a prominent scene during the early 90's. It was made up of mostly women. "Riot grrl" music dealt with issues such as feminism, rape, abortion, sexuality, etc., and some girls published 'zines. However, today it has been incorrectly used by Good Charlotte fangirls to describe female fans of the band, due to a song they wrote called "Riot Girl" describing their dream girl.
2. A girl or woman involved in the movement.
Also spelled "riot grrl" or "riot grrrl".

oh wow. I haven't thought about the riot girl scene in ages, totally spaced out on it.

Prime examples are Bikini Kill, Sleater Kenney, Le Tigre, stuff like that?

By the same criteria by which you just judged 'riot grrl', punk was a "fad" too.

The good charlotte thing is news to me and made me throw up a little.

And it wasn't a fad, it was labeling, much like labeling punk as punk, but I'm not gonna debate it, too much. Besides, there is way too much good music associated with the whole thing to totally dismiss it as a simple fad, but whatever.

Also, just out of curiousity, what exactly was the context in which they were brought up in your class?
