July 2004

Eh? Eh? Sorry I couldn't fit televised in there... No, Nintendo says it has no plans to offer the Revolution as HDTV capable, which seems like an absolutely CRACKING strategy since widescreen format seems to be the choice du jour.

I wonder if the Revolution is going to ship with one of those old school analog antaena jobbies that screw into the back of your television, circa 1985?

God, Nintendo is getting stupider with each news item, as far as the console race goes.

Clicky that link above to read, curt: Neowin.net.

It's almost like a Nintendo exec bet another that he could turn their empire into ashes in two systems or less.

And they'll probably wind up making more money from Revolution than Sony and Microsoft combined again. Seriously, didn't we hear the same kind of shit when Nintendo decided not to include a DVD player or decent online support the last time around?

It does sound like a decision grounded in the present, though, when HDTV isn't very widespread and is very expensive. This seems to assume that it will remain so for the next three years or so. Personally, I wouldn't make that bet if I were trying to guess the future, but it's not my money on the line.

I don't care for myself because I'm not going to be able to afford an HDTV anytime soon, but it does seem pretty fucking dumb.

I'm not an official business analyst or anything, but someone saying that Nintendo ever made more money than Sony on anything post Super-Nintendo is simply crazy. I'm not biased or anything, it's just a fact.

As far as I know, they were the only ones making a profit on the consoles they sold. Microsoft and Sony were losing money on those, and will be again this time.

It's a good thing you're not an official business analyst or anything. (Scroll down to "THE BIG TEST: OPERATING EARNINGS" for more information.)

I think this is probably correct, and I think it will be correct again, since Sony is planning on adding blueray dvd to it's ps3, they'll be losing money on the hardware and then making the money on the software.

But I think, the next gen consoles will go up a higher price tier than before, I would expect to pay somewhere around $400-500 usd for a next gen (xbox 360, or ps3) machine, as they will become less and less console, and more family-room-pc.

Maybe Nintendo can save money on hardware by going back to 16 bit cartridges.

The gameboy sold better than Sony's non-existant handheld? Get right out of town!

...this is what I had seen before, I haven't seen firm pricing on the xbox360, but that doesn't mean there isn't any, or that it's not $300.00.

2 things:

1. The Game Boy is how Nintendo made money in the Playstation days. Handheld or not, that's what it did.
2. If I want a PC, I'm going to build one, not to mention I could hold out for a bit, then make one that blew the consoles out of the water. PCs and Consoles should be seperate. If I want to play games I know I'm going to have fun with, I'm going to buy a Revolution.

Is that $500 how much they'd have to sell the system for if they didn't want to lose money on each one sold? That's what I'm thinking.

Ha ha, I think I might have an RF Switch around here, that's good enough for my Nintendo console. 1986-2006! Woo hoo!

I guess I should add this, too:

See, I find it hard to believe there are so many people out there that refuse to take the Revolution as is. What it's going to do, it will do well. New games, old games (fucking awesome, btw), play DVDs, yadda yadda. It will be a fun system, just as the other systems will be I'm sure (although I'm not impressed with the 360 as of now, went through the E3 coverage and everything). Who cares if it doesn't have certain things? Wait until it comes out, then start complaining.

I admire that Nintendo is taking a different direction. Not that you crazy boys don't have buying power or anything... but I think that it is fair to say Nintendo has always been a little more "child friendly." For under 18 year olds, I think it makes sense not to include the HDTV capability. No matter how much my brother screams, he can't hook up his systems to the family tv. I don't know any children with HDTVs in their bedrooms. Chances are that he'll be getting a Revolution and not a PS3... as for my household I know we'll be getting both. But a 360? Not over my cold dead body.

I re-read what I wrote and realize I was wrong when referring to money, but I'm fairly positive that overall profit does not directly translate to number of units sold.
