I'm doing a paper for a class on this topic.
I say no, because of this

The parenthesis mean that is is the negation of the object.

Discuss.. biggrin

Oh, I know. But, the prolonging of it past June 1975 was due to safety statistics. Fatalities were down 10% after adjusting for the reduction in driving distance. The public approved of that. We don't really have to worry about fuel conservation (as much) as we do safety. If fuel conservation was a problem, we would take another look at our average vehicle choice.

Montana did away with speed limits for a short while.

Revoked because the "reasonable and prudent" law was considered unconstitutional because the law was too vague.

it would be nice to have a few selected roads throughout the country be limitless, but you would have to maintain, patrol, and govern it like the Germans do on the autobahn.

On saturday a friend and me drove back to Munich from Leipzig and since we were in a hurry we did an average of about 150 kilometer per hour. That was nice. But on a saturday the autobahn is usually not crowded and there are no trucks allowd on weekends.

On a weekday the autobahn can be a real horror, with big benzes and bmws going a constant 200 km/h on the leftlane, lights flashing like they own the place.

In most european countries there are highway speedlimits set at 130 km/h, which I would totally vote for, given the chance.

I don't think it will happen. In general, American drivers don't have the discipline required for an autobahn. It requires lane discipline, something that is unheard of here (at least in MN), and all sorts of other things people are unwilling to do.

As much as I'd like it, it just don't think it would work.

Is that graphic a joke? Some kind of satire or parody?

Isn't it "Audobahn?" With a "d?"

And that graphic is practically meaningless.

nope, because they wouldn't have gotten highway funding otherwise.

Despite the widespread belief of complete freedom from speed limits, and a lobbying effort that has the same power and deep pockets that the American gun lobby has, some speed regulations can be found on the Autobahns. Many sections, particularly those with dangerous curves, in urban areas, or with unusually constant heavy traffic, may feature speed limits ranging from 80 to 120 km/h (50-75 mph). In construction zones, the limit may be as low as 60 km/h (37 mph). Also, some sections now feature nighttime and wet-weather speed restrictions, and trucks are always regulated (see table below). Still, much of the Autobahn is unlimited, but there is a recommended limit of 130 km/h (81 mph). This recommendation is generally seen for what it is-- an attempt by the government to cover itself without having to upset millions of Porsche and BMW owners/voters. However, if you exceed the recommended limit and are involved in an accident, you could be responsible for some of the damage costs even if you are not at fault.

A system like this would work wonders in america, especially for cross country driving. Trying to drive to CA from PA at 65 or 55 is a joke.

The autobahn only says no speed limit in some areas of it, its not a no speed limit road all the way down. they also have to wait till they are 18 to be able to drive. and one of the reasons we have speed limits is because no federal funding for road repair to the states that choose not to keep them

This, plus the sue-happy culture we live in make an American version of the Autobahn a non-issue.

Not to mention the Russian lesbians going 200 km/h in the wrong lane.
