Sonny Barger is best known as the founder and President of the Hells Angels Motorcycle club. But now that he's published four books with the latest being, Freedom: Credos from the Road, you will have to add author to that.

Freedom is quite different from his previous books, Hell's Angel a history of the club, Ridin' High, Livin' Free a collection of true stories, modern myths, and biker tales and his first novel Dead in 5 Heartbeats.

Freedom is presented in the form of 50 credos in which Sonny...

This is kind of freaky, right now I'm reading Hell's Angels by HST, in which Barger is a main participant. I literally just set the book down, clicked on SG, and this article is one of the first things I see.Good stuff.

Oh, and Sonny was not the founder of Hell's Angels. They started in the 50's, and Sonny became prez in the 60's.

He's not promoting the Hell's Angels and for the first time in a long time, there is finally an interview that I was interested to read. I worked at a Harley shop for a while and got to meet some Hell's Angels, sure some are criminals, but basically if you don't fuck with them, they don't fuck with you. And because they are so infamous, they can't pull the same shit that they used to pull. However, Best bikers i know don't wear any patches.

It's silly you would call all of them criminals. That's a pretty big generalization. Is it based on personal experience or rumors and assumptions?

Hells Angels were the main criminal organization controlling drug traffic, prostitution and other illegal activities in Eastern Canada until about 2 years ago when massive arrestations and convictions were made possible by the new Canadian anti-gang law.

Unlike others who were there who were struck from the start by the menacing atmosphere, the brooding ugliness and unsettling presence of the Hell's Angels, Marcia recalls nothing about being at Altamont that seemed threatening or ominous, although down near the stage people were being beaten close to death by Sonny Barger's goon squads.
"I really did not experience anything weird that day, like evil vibes or danger," she tells Uncut quite breezily. "I'm sure I was just too absorbed with myself and my own drug trip. I may have known that the Hell's Angels were policing the event, but being a Californian living in the Bay Area, I was used to them being around..."

I guess I am a little sensitive about the group since the late 70's when 5 of thier members raped friend of mine beat her up and left her in an isolated area in CA to die, Nice guys.
I have been a motorcycle guy for over 32 years and have seen thier BS up close they are just like any other criminal gang.

Don't you have to be a 1% to be an Angel or a Warlock,or an Outlaw?
Does anyone know what a 1% is?
I hung out with a lot of Bikers when I chased the GratefulDead around.
Some wore colors others were Lone Wolvess. If you didn't want that 1% tat.
You remained a Lone Wolf. Not putting down any of them. Most were straight up.
just a thought

The term was first used in the 60's to describe some of the people that attended motorcycle events back then. The American Motorcycle Association stated that 99% of the people at their events were god fearing and family oriented. The other 1% were hard partying, non-mainstram type people. Some of the early bikers embraced the term and decided to call themselves 1%ers. It didn't mean that they were law breakers or low life individuals. Simply meant they rode their bikes seven days a week in all kinds of weather, liked to drink and raise a little hell.

Yeah, but 1% has since been adopted as a more serious conotation.

I ride hard and fast, all year long, drink a lot of alcohol and raise a lot of hell when I'm out on my bike, but I would never claim 1%. Just like I would never invent a 3 patch insignia and wear it on the back of my jacket.

i was simply stating where the term first came from. that is how it began.

i am sorry that you had a bad experience in your past with the hells angels but to say that they are all a bunch of criminals and that they all suck just shows how much you don't know. there are bad seeds in every crowd. and i have much to learn about a lot of things in my life, but not this subject.

I understand that but not all of them are complete losers. And I'm not just saying that off the top of my head. I've grown up around a pretty huge 1% club (And I'm not going to say who, so don't ask) and I just get tired of people talking shit all the time.

But I can understand where it comes from. Completely. It doesn't mean it's right.

Edited a million times because I felt like it.

No matter what patch is on the back of their jacket, HAs and every other biker worth the designation is, first and foremost, a human being.
For every bullshit generalization by someone who's never met a member of a real MC - and no, "72 and Sunny" RUBS don't count - I can tell you a factual story about a stranger feeding me, helping me fix my bike on the side of the road, or giving me a place to stay just because we were both on two wheels.
Folks should be careful when speaking about things outside their sphere of experience. It really only serves to magnify their ignorance for others.

The term one-percenter was coined after a gathering of the American Motorcycle 'Gypsy Tour' on July 4, 1947. The 3000 riders descended on Hollister, California which was sponsoring a 'dirt hill climb'. When violence broke out the Motorcycle Association issued a statement saying that 99% of riders were respectable, pleasure riders and the other one-percent were troublemakers.
