The albums honestly did not have that much bass. There was the simple bassline on "Seven Nation Army" and in live shows he just does it with the electric guitar. A few others. Mostly they just don't have a bass guitar. Nor do The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Death From Above 1979 doesn't have a lead guitar. Whatever works.

Wasn't the bassline on "Seven Nation Army" actually White's electric guitar played to sound like bass?

I'm not really the best at telling instruments apart, but after seeing him play it on Conan, I went back and listened again. I'm almost positive it's a bass. It's just got a deeper sound to it than if it had been his electric guitar. I guess it could be augmented, but as I recall on Elephant they recorded on analog equipment and didn't fuck with that stuff much.

He used a pedal to shift his guitar sound down an octave.

My thoughts:

1. Jack White's new missus is beautiful.

2. Meg White is beautiful.

3. The White Stripes kick ungodly amounts of ass, despite what Brinstar may think. Elephant feels like a good 70's rock revival. And I mean that in the most complimentary way possible.

4. I'm greatly looking forward to Get Behind Me Satan.

Nitpick, what makes the blues the blues is the approach to songwriting. The pentatonic scale is obviously the standard in blues. But I would argue that blues has a broader definition, than just 8 bars, pentatonic licks, and "my woman done lef' me," lyrics.

You gotta be drunk too.

Yes. I didn't believe it at first, but I've read that a couple of places.

But apparently that's already been established. I suppose I should read the entire page before responding. blackeyed

They were good? People kept talking about how they were reviving rock or something, but their songs were even more simplistic than punk, which was already the simplistic version of rock. Oh, but they lacked the energy of punk.

And her drumming is mediocre. And the no bass thing was stupid, but I guess they finally realized that.

Other than that though, they're alright I guess. I'd pay 3 bucks to see them play in some kids garage I guess.

Brinstar, all I can say about your knowledge of music is that you sure know a lot about Nintendo.

No, please say more. Tell me where the lack of knowledge comes in. Punk wasn't stripped down rock with energy? The White Stripes aren't stripped down rock? Her drumming ISN'T mediocre? (please argue that one, I will laugh hard)

Funny how a band heavily influenced by blues couldn't find a bass player. Well, until they realized that yes, they did actually need one after all.

Ummmm, what makes the Blues the Blues is the pentatonic scale and phrasing. I was going to say something snide about "Try telling such-and-such blues legend they weren't playing the blues because they didn't have a bass backing them" but there were so fucking many of them just off the top of my head, I couldn't pick one.

Try picking argument in something you know something about.

If you're saying there are are additional intractable elements that are necessary to partake of the eidos of Blues, then yes, but as they are intractable there's really not much point in discussing them, whereas if I write:

I, IV, I, I
I, IV, I, I
V, IV, I, V

Anyone with much musical education is going to know exactly what that is.

Incidentally, since we're nitpicking, I assume you mean 12 bars.

He was
married to Meg White from 1996-2000, according to Rolling Stone.

Oh, and his birth name is John Gillis. Her stage name is her real name, as far as I know.

[Edited on Jun 08, 2005 by SadPanda]

He took his wife's last name, and Jack is a common nickname for John. It's not really a stage name.
