i just got my first telemarketing call ever on my cell phone from some travel scam company. i thought this practice was illegal, but now that we have the do not call list, they must have changed the rules.

so if you use a cell phone as your main phone line (as i do) and you thought you were immune this whole time, i would strongly recommend signing up for the do not call list.

either register online or call 888 382 1222 from the phone you want to register.

also, don't incoming answer calls from 214 279 0990. they're the bastards who called.

this has been a public service announcement.

My rule is this, if I don't know who is calling, I don't answer. While this means I might miss out on being Charlize Theron's date to the Oscars, it makes my life run a bit smoother.

I thought it was still illegal too (because people have to pay for a set amount of minutes) However, I did get a telemarketing call on mine a few weeks ago too. I hope I don't start getting a barrage of these stupid things. I don't even bother answering my home phone anymore because 90% of the time it's telemarketers calling. I just let it go straight to the answering machine.

Actually, according to this, they still are barred from calling cell phones.

Wpost

Since the first telemarketing rules were adopted in 1991, the Federal Communications Commission has barred solicitors from using automated dialers to call cell phones, the predominant way telemarketers make their calls.

It's interesting - I've been working in voice over ip, and heard about a client of one of our clients getting fined pretty heavily for violating that. I guess they can get fined individually per state, as well as nationally.

I wasn't aware the rules regarding mobile phones had changed, either, but if you notice that page uses the verbiage "home or mobile phone."

That says autodialers - think it applies to call centers, too? (Where you're being called by a live human being..)

Sometimes I think I'm the only backwards redneck left on the planet that refuses to get a cell phone.

Wait: You have to pay to *receive* calls? Bonkers.

For people in the UK: It is illegal for people to call you if you have registered your number with the Telephone Preference Service, or if you have asked them not to. I still get the occasional call, but not nearly as many as I used to. The only time I've got an SMS since I reported it to ICSTIS and the operator got a £5,000 fine and a 6 month ban, so that's was nice.

TPS - UK

A couple more points: The "Don't press nine or they'll charge you a gajillion pounds" thing? That's a hoax.

The really annoying one at the moment is American Robot Voices. I'm not sure that this is much help, but at least it's a start.

I never answer unless I have the number in my phone. Even then, I often don't answer. Thank you for the link, though. Annoying phone calls that threaten to use up my minutes are... well, annoying.

well, it's a bit more complicated than that. you get billed for two different types of usage: (1) using the cellular network ("airtime") and (2) regular call charges. you always get billed for airtime (unless you're within your plan) whether you initiate the call or not. but your bill for regular call charges works just like a land phone: you don't get billed to receive calls, you don't get billed for local calls, and you (might) pay for long distance and international calls.

this system makes sense to me. as the mobile user, you're paying for your choice to use the cellular network.

everywhere else in the world, everyone has to pay to call mobile numbers, which i find bizarre. it's like paying extra to send someone an email just because their computer uses wi-fi instead of a wired network.

I signed up for it, thanks s5.

Whenever telemarketers call me I just tell them to hold for a second and then I put the phone up to my computer speakers and blast the most obnoxious metal music that I have. And then after a minute I say "Hello are you still there?...Oh ok. Just wait, could you hold on one more time for me, thanks." And then I put the phone back up to the speakers. biggrin

Some stupid magazine company called me trying to sell me a 5 yr subscription to 4 magazines I already have for $20/month. They could never tell me which mags I had. I was surprised that they called on my cell but then one of my friends told me that because a lot of people were putting their lan phone on the Do Not Call list, they got the okay to use cell #s which is stupid because they are wasting YOUR minutes. I put my number on the list and they stopped calling me. One time before my number took effect, they called and mispronounced my name so I told them they had the wrong number biggrin
