Recent findings by Leigh Simmons and Sarah Kilgallon of the University of Western Austrailia suggest men who are in competition with other men for the same female produce better sperm, New Scientist reports.

Men who view pornographic images of two men and a woman produce better-quality sperm than men viewing pornographic images of just women, an Australian study reveals.

The finding suggests that humans may be capable of subconsciously increasing semen quality when faced with the possibility that their sperm will have to outrun those of other men in a woman’s reproductive tract.

In the study, zoologists Leigh Simmons and Sarah Kilgallon of the University of Western Australia in Perth asked 52 heterosexual men aged between 18 and 35 years to ejaculate into a container after viewing the two types of image.

The volunteers had previously abstained from sexual activity for two to six days. In samples from men who viewed the images containing the two men and a woman - the “sperm-competition” images - 52% of the sperm were motile. This compared with 49% sperm motility in the men who viewed the images of women only – a difference that was statistically significant after taking into account lifestyle factors such as cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption.

The study speculates this is a carry-over from man's evolution from primates, where sexual competition was a part of natural selection of the species. It goes further to speculate that this also has an influence on the tastes of pornography men watch, when favoring group sex porn.

However, Simmons is not suggesting that humans regularly indulge in multiple matings. “We need to step away from that in 2005. The risk of sperm competition is very low nowadays, but in the lineage of primates that resulted in humans there was probably sperm competition,” he says

Previous studies have found that men who look at pornographic images depicting groups prefer the sorts of sperm-competition images used in the current study. Men may simply have evolved to find them more erotic so that they can respond appropriately to sperm competition, says Simmons.

This poses some very useful information in fertility medicine. If your wife starts demanding you watch Bukkakae Gang Bang #42 before coming to bed, you may begin to speculate on her motives.

My only question is, how do I become a zoologist in Austrailia?

So, if you ever want to get your girl pregnant, you can look at all the orgy porn you want, and tell her "Honey, it's for the marriage. I'm doing it for the baby!"

Yes, considering this is an IMMEDIATE effect. Your talking about millions of swimmers here.

Given that it only takes one...I'd say so. It doesn't really feel statistically significant, but they're Australian scientists, so I would be a fool to argue with them.

Here's the guy's website. He has several .pdfs of his research papers, but I didn't see this in there. I'd be curious to see what his error was, though, as it was above 1% in some of his other papers. This "difference" could be statistically meaningless. Or maybe not.

So the next time a girl asks why I look at so much porn I can tell her that it is for the good of the species?

I can't imagine that 52 heterosexual males is an adequate range, surely? Flipped the participants around, so that the previously lesbian-viewing group was rockin' the orgies, and I reckon you'd have flipped results.

I say you should definitely apply for a grant for that study.

How about one in which I conclusively prove that many heterosexual males enjoy drinking beer?

One step at a time.
biggrin

I'm applying for the grant to see how many blowjobs it takes before your get ocular problems, and concurrently the effects injesting sperm has on female fertility and resiliency to sperm.

Actually, that last study was already conducted. As it turns out, if women swallow, their bodies as less likely to attack sperm once in thier bodies. Neat huh?
