CULTURE: Japanese Zoo Home to Gay Penguins

Noboribetsu Marine Park Nixe, in Hokkaido, Japan, is home to several gay penguin couples. The King Penguins have decided that they would rather pair off with their own sex than breed.

The park has always had more male than female penguins. Of its 12 birds, eight are male, three female and the remaining bird's sex remains unknown.
Park officials first noticed two male penguins had formed a same-sex couple in 2003. Last year, two females paired off. Another pair of males have since formed a homosexual relationship.

Zoologists have noted that penguins rarely have such relationships in the wild.
