Another cinematic era is dissolving around us: iconic actress Anne Bancroft passed away on Monday, June 6th, at Mount Sinai hospital, succumbing to uterine cancer at the age of 73.

Anna Maria Louisa Italiano was born Sept. 17, 1931, in the Bronx to Italian immigrant parents. Her father, Michael, was a patternmaker, and her mother, Mildred, a telephone operator. By the time she was 2 years old she was learning to sing and dance. "Why play with dolls," she recalled years later, "when you can sing 'I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate' on the street corner?" Even so, by the time she left high school she had decided to become a laboratory technician. Instead, her mother insisted she attend the New York Academy of Dramatic Arts. Two years later she found work in television where, as Anne Marno, she appeared in scores of dramatic shows. In 1951 she was asked to participate in another actor's screen test for 20th Century Fox, after which she, not he, was offered the contract that took her to Hollywood. At the studio she was handed a book of names and urged to choose a new one. She became Anne Bancroft.

In 1964 she married Mel Brooks, who survives her along with their son, Maximilian, and grandson.

With a decade-spanning Oscar-winning career playing everything from a mother superior to the quintessential "older woman" seductress, she made a formidable dent in the landscape of Hollywood. Now, she will be sorely missed.

I loved her in Great Expectations.

I've never even heard of uterine cancer, I didn't know it could happen. Cancer sucks.

Aww, he fixed it! Thanks, S-UK.

Well since I have a post here anyway, about a month ago there was a thread about who you'd be really sad to see go, and I said something like:

"Either one."

How was I to know it'd be so soon. frown

Yes, Great Expectations was made about 5 or so years ago. It starred Ethan Hawke and Gweneth Paltrow, and it was fucking amazing! I watch it every chance I get.

did you just insult me with a line from a very recent movie and then tell me to go watch another very recent one in some condescending manner? I'm not sure I get you. and by the way great expectations was a fucking steaming horseshit of a movie. snatch wasn't though.

Actresses are measured by the things that they have done recently.

The most recent movie of hers that I really liked, looking on her IMDB profile was Home for the Holidays. Pretty typical Thanksgiving movie, really, but has a lot of good performances in it.

Home for the Holidays was great. It even defied the fact of having Steve Guttenberg in it to be great. smile
(I have a soft spot for Thanksgiving movies. Planes, Trains, & Automobiles makes me misty-eyed.)
