A woman on a flight from Singapore to Melbourne, Australia was stopped and custom officials found 51 live tropical fish hidden in her skirt. These fish were allegedly hidden in an apron that appeared to be specially designed for these fish.

"During the search customs officers became suspicious after hearing 'flipping' noises coming from the vicinity of her waist," the Australian Customs Service said in a press release. "An examination revealed 15 plastic water-filled bags holding fish allegedly concealed inside a purpose-built apron."

The exact type of fish was not immediately known, but they could carry disease harmful to Australian fish if released locally.

Once the type of fish is determined, the woman will be charged. If charged with smuggling wildlife, the woman could face fines of up to $83,617 USD.

Maybe she just doesn't like airplane food. I keep a powerbar or two in my pockets for long flights, and you really can't beat fresh fish.

You can't even take standard Cold/Flu remedies through Dubai. Well none with Codine in its a standard pick me up included in pills but its technically a opiate(?) derivative I think. Ok I might be wrong on the exact derivative.
Even so a English woman passing through Dubai carrying Tamazipan (which was ok) and some Codine (prescribed by a Dubai doctor and sold in Dubai over the counter) was chained to a wall so her arms were above her head and her feet could barely scrape the ground for hours. She started to pass out but fortunately was let down before she had a heart attack. She was still held for a further 5 weeks while the Embassy did its thing.
Yemen is the only country in the Middle East signed up to the treaty opposed to treating prisoners in this way. Not that Yemens all that
see.

Maybe it's just the hot new fashion to have fish swimming around in pouches inside your skirt... I mean, in the 70's they had platform shoes with fish in them.

I like the precision of the possible fine. Up to $83, 617. Absolutely not any more than that. No. Definitely not. So there.

I was cool with it until you mentioned it, but now I'm pretty unhappy. I mean, no decimal values? There must be rounding going on here, and I demand to see it!

Hm. If that's divided evenly, it'd be $1639.549 per fish. I think you're right, they could at least have rounded up the 0.1 cent...

Hm, the introduction of non-native species can really cause unimaginable problems. Maybe because it is such a ridiculous story it'll get a lot of press and people will realize it's not a good idea.

Or maybe it will just cause people to be more creative... What if fish-mules use the same desperate measures as drug-mules? shocked rectal aquariums? surreal Wow.

The Australians take this stuff pretty seriously. I had to get through two checkpoints when I went to Oz; one normal immigrations and one just for biological stuff. No seeds or fruit or animals. There's stuff on the plane about "NO WILDLIFE" and there are posters everywhere.

She's a bad bad lady.

Think the aussies are trying to preserve that unique environment they have, and the unique wildlife native ONLY to Australia. (Sounds like a monopoly of some sort to me)

{is that a fish in your skirt, or are you just happy to see me}
