they sell them around 18000 CA$ (+- 15000 US) around here. This thing pretty much stump all the hybrid in fuel consumption test....but It's really small and I think it doesn't go beyond 70 MPH...
Maybe in Canada, but I was passed going almost 80MPH in Italy (converted from kph) by one.
Top speed on the Canadian ones is around 140km/h. So around 87.5mph.
I wouldn't mind getting one to commute in, but it would be pretty impractical for just about anything else. Also, I'd have to wear a mask while driving it so NOBODY COULD EVER FIND OUT.
I think I was going between 130 and 135, and the guy went by me like I was barely moving.
Was it exactly like the one in that picture? Because Smart also has gas-powered roadsters. They were considering bringing them over to North America as the Dodge Slingshot, I believe. I'm not sure what the top speed on those ones are, but I'm sure they're faster than the run-of-the-mill Smarts.

I thought about getting one, but considering how easy this would be...
It could happen to any car, but people just need a lot less manpower now.

These things are all over the place in my town.
I've seen 4 over on their side now.
(Which really does suck as they are a noble invention. Why can't these wankers go find a few more wankers and tip over some SUVs??)
AnywayI just bought an Echo and seeing these sideways Smart cars effected my decision not to buy one.
That and the fuel economy claims are bogus.
We topped the tank of the Echo and later the the Smart and drove from my house in the suburbs into the city and back twice and then topped the tank again.
While this is hardly a scientific experiment the fuel consumption in the Smart was only marginally better then the Echo and not anywhere near what was claimed by the dealer.
The Echo gets about 50 MPG BTW.
I have a 1968 Volkswagen Sedan that gets about 50 mpg. And it's much larger than the Smart car - the VW was considered a mid-size car everywhere except the US.
My sister, however, is in love with the Smart car. We'll see if she gets one when they introduce them here.
Edit: I remembered what they sort of remind me of: the BMW Isetta.

Oh come on dude!
Are you talking about a 411/2 or a Type 3?
I have 2 VWs. Guilt is what led me to the Echo.
How the hell are you getting mileage like that?
I can't believe you.
My 73 perfectly tuned super-beetle gets about 20MPG and the emissions are shameful.

Type 1. But it's quite a bit lighter than stock. No emissions control - this is MN, and I can get away with that. Exhaust comes straight off the headers. No automatic choke. 8 gallon tank, somewhere around 350-375 miles per tank. I guess I lied - that's around 45 mpg.
Wasn't the '73 SB rated at 30 mpg? Take a couple of hundred pounds off it, and there you go.

OK maybe.
I had a Westy with nothing between the headers and the exhaust.
Nasty!
I think the Beetles may have pushed 30MPG when they were new and running leaded gas but that would be highway miles.
My Echo's getting near 50 in the city with minimal emmissions.
I can brag now but for 10 years I was driving belchy VWs
