So i've decided to try and get the closest shave with a straight razor. That's what I hear anyways. Will you guys give me some tips/advice/ basically teach me how to shave with a straight razor? I'm not going to go at it without any advice,I don't feel like losing too much blood tomorrow. Help would be so appreciated.

I've never done it myself. But I've had it done at the barber a couple of times. I'd let the professionals do it if I were you. Ha, last time, my man told me:

"Lay back in the chair, my friend. I make your face as smooth as baby's ass."

He was right. I didn't have to shave for a month after that.

Getting shaved by a barber with a straight razor seems like the ultimate in big shot pampering and so I have not felt that I have had an occasion that deserved it in my life as a shaving male. I can't wait til I have one though, cause I'd love to have it done.

Dude, it does kick ass. It makes me feel distinguished somehow. They automatically give you one at my barber when you get a haircut.

Fancy? Ha! A cut costs $7. It's just extremely old-fashioned. That place is awesome though.

Make sure the razor is sharp.

Make sure you soak the stubble in warm / hot water for two minutes first (to make it as soft as possible). This is why shaving in the shower is nice, but I wouldn't recommend it witha straight razor.

Have a big bowl of hot water to clean the blade every stroke nearby.

Use a good quality cream or oil.

Use a shaving brush. This will exfoliate and raise the stubble.

Have good lighting and a good mirror.

Shave with the direction of growth, not against it.

read this thread for more tips.

I have a straight razor and I can shave myself with it, but it has taken a lot of effort to learn. but I can shave fairly well now. The single biggest thing that took me the most time to learn is how to sharpen the razor. Once you get that right, the shave works so much better.

Is it better than a Gillete Mach 3 razor? Not really, but it is different.

I like the shave better, because I get ingrown hairs and the straight razor stops this. Also, I get more cuts from a safety razor. However, if you are cack handed, stick to a safety razor. You do need to be careful.

Step 1. Start with the DVD showing how to do it.

Step 2. Buy a practive razor to learn how to hold the blade. This type takes a normal razor, but don't fit it and don't use the normal razor - it cuts badly. Mine was included in this book.

Step 3. Assemble your clobber.

Step 4. Go to theStraightrazor Place web site.

A straight razor does make for a nice shave, but I find that what makes the biggest difference is shaving cream. I have a beard like a wire brush, so closeness has always been an issue.

I tried all sorts of things, and have eventually settled on a luxury shave cream from Crabtree & Evelyn. It costs more, but I find it's well worth it. Combine it with my Mach 3, and I'm pretty smooth.

An important thing to remember, whether shaving with straight or safety razor, is that you're never going to get every little patch of hair completely smooth. Trying will result in bleeding.

not to sound stereotypical, but look for a barber in a black neighbourhood, the old timers tend to still use a straight blade, and can probably give you some tips...
.. and practice on a grapefruit for a couple of hours before trying it on yourself.... it's more skin like than trying it on a ballon, as some people will say to use.
