exactly. thank you.

quiet commie scum.

i kid, i kid.

yeah, i'm going to have to second this. i've lost piercings to job interviews, and to jobs, but rent is more important than holes in my face, as much as i love my piercings.

bingo.
this obviously is not a situation of eat or dont eat.

Target and Barnes & Noble don't have any official rule saying they don't allow it. Starbucks, too, I think.

Thanks all, the problem is the place i live is very conservative(and i can't move until i can get a job of course) and i'm just fed up with having to remove my piercings temporarily cause I have done so since I was 14(to hide them from my parents lol)so i will just keep looking(adult and head shops around here require employees to be 21(and sex toys are banned lol) or else i would definately work there) and keep bugging hottopic(as i've been doing for about 3 years now)

well, it sounds like you like your piercings more than you want a job with the unwillingness to take them out, so youre going to have to make up your mind there pretty soon, or youre going to starve. so whats it going to be?

This is kind of what it sounds like to me too. Unfortunately you're going to come to a point where you've got no choice. Look into retainers if you can get away with that, or bite the bullet and take out the ones that are really really causing problems (the most extreme ones).
Life is all about choices. Think about it this way. If you have to take out your piercings to get a job now in order to move out of the conservative place you are in, you'll be able to go someplace more accepting of your lifestyle/piercings and perhaps get a decent job that allows you to wear those piercings thereby making you happier in the long run. smile

go to college.

no, seriously. even if it's just a jc. first of all, you can work on campus and probably keep most of your piercings. second of all, you can start getting an education and work on another way to get out of where you are, even if it means transferring to another place after a couple years from jc. without an education, someone with an alternative appearance has even less chance of making it anywhere. you can be uneducated and look normal and be employed, but you can't be uneducated and look odd and expect to be able to get a decent job. a head shop or porn store is not a decent job. trust me, i worked at a porn store.

busting ass to tell them/let them know how much you want the job really doesnt do all that much....

also i have a degree, no piercings or tats, dress formally and STILL cant breakthrough to basic entry level clerical or similar.

oh and those terms are quite subjective, highly inflammatory and utterly debasing to most all people.

I once tried to get a job at hot topic.
They basically told me that my straight, normal colored hair, single nostril piercing, and my jeans and cute teeshirts and sneakers were just not what they were looking for. I guess they have their standards too...

Employers struggle to have their employees appear to be as neutral as possible. Thats why restaurant & retail uniforms are usually conservative and match the theme of the store. Ideally, they don't want any customers to make any judgments of the employees before even speaking to them. This is the main reason that a lot of places don't allow anything that expresses too much individuality.

WHile I don't always agree with it, I unfortunately understand it. The only reason I'm allowed to do whatever I want with my appearence is because I work in the office and rarely see outside people.

The only advice I can offer is try places that has has a smaller demographic. Yes, I am talking about Hot Topic and similiar stores. Obviously they encourage their employees to express themselves through piercings, tattoos and fun hair.

I know it's been said plenty of times before, but normal and abnormal are subjective terms.

But mathematically speaking they really aren't. Simplistically speaking, if there are 100 people in the world, and 80 of them don't have mods and 20 of them do, it's abnormal to have mods.

Asigning a value judgement to "normal" or "abnormal" is where the subjectivity comes in. When Normal = Good and Abnormal = Bad, that's when there's a problem.

Sorry I'm such a douche.

i've had to take my piercings out for work at every job i've had...besides when i worked in a coffee house.. where i would still be if it werent for corperate coffee >:|....

i've had both of my facial piercings for 8 & 10 years now, so i can take them out for days at a time and they won't close up. you just have to train them. take them out for 10 minutes or so every day for a week then up the ammount of time you leave them out. having said all of that, i'm currently looking for a job that won't make my morning routine consist of...
taking out my piercings
finding a pair of clean pants because i cant wear anything that shows my lower leg tat
finding a shirt that doesnt lift above my pants line in the back when i move my arms up (this is harder than you think) because i cant show the tat on my lower back.
and i'm also getting tired of being asked to tone my hair down.. it's not even a weird color.. it's just a brighter natural red. >_<

in the last 2 places i've worked, 2 other girls with tattoos on their legs were allowed to show them because one was a rose and the other was a butterfly, but because mine are "weird" i was asked to keep them covered.

unless you get a job at hot topic, a record store or a head shop, you're not going to find many places that will let you keep them. oh.. and call centers. most of my heavily tattooed/pierced friends work at call centers.

i applied at spencers once, about 5 years ago, and they told me i wouldnt be able to wear my piercings. they -sell- body jewelry in the fucking store. i thought it was ridiculous so even though i could have taken them out, i decided not to work there based on principal. i think they might have changed their rules by now though.

*EDIT* i almost forgot.. when i first had both my piercings i worked at target, and that was 8 years ago so they were way ahead of their time letting a girl work there with facial jewelry. i still see pierced people at target, but it's up to the store manager. i think most of them allow it because there's something about it in their store policy. they have ridiculous anti-discrimination rules that make them super carefull about not hiring people because of things like that. of course, the manager could just not hire you and give you a different reason.
wink

yea, it makes me mad that somehow having a ring in your nose or a tattoo on your wrist makes you an inferior candidate for most jobs. i am going through that right now too. sure, it's my own fault for getting tattoos... i just wish people could understand that i can do your crap ass job just as well whether i have a couple tattoos or not. it's not as if i look freaky or anything.
