I've got crows going nuts in the tree outside my window. This is not the first time. They've woken me up at 6.30am before, which is so not cool. I've thrown Pop Its, and that scares them away for about 5 minutes. I've taken a pellet gun to them, but they still come back. Short of me using my shotgun, is there anything I can do?

The fuckers.

Maybe that's my problem.

If I was living in an area where gunfire would not be a big deal, I would shoot with something more than an air pistol.

I think if I could take the ringleader crow out (there is one), the rest would skedaddle. But they're way up in the tree.

I'll be back in a few. I'm gonna go shoot some more pellets.

Water gun scare crow

P.S. Shooting them may be illegal. Poisoning may be too.

I was going to suggest a pellet gun, but it seems you've already tried that. Usually they get the point after you shoot one of them.

See if you can find a fake owl. They make them out of foam and such. I guess you'd call it a scarecrow, since it scares crows. It'll take them at least a day or two to learn it's not a real owl.

Crows are too smart for their own good.

They sell fake owls and snakes you can put in the tree. Only works for a little while, though, and they'll just poop on them. tongue

The City of denver did something similiar a year or so ago, to combat a pigeon problem. They sprinkled feed laced with LSD to them.

Whoa tuff, save that for the "How do you legally get crows to shut the fuck up?" thread that's bound to pop up.

The State of West Virginia just eats them, as far as I have heard. Come to think of it, perhaps thats why they were tripping so hard, last time I visited.

I love the regular birds, like sparrows. So I don't want to scare them or the squirrels with a fake owl. I used to shoot bluejays with a water gun, one of them supersoakers. They figured out how far it would shoot and stay right up to that spot. They're assholes, too, stealing all the peanuts we left for the squirrels.

A friend said she went to the zoo about a year ago and saw a monkey catch a crow. He was waving it around and all the other crows went apeshit, dive bombing him. Then the monkey ate the crow.

I'm ready to climb this tree and tear into one myself, then leave his carcass as a warning to all the other crows.

For the record, I don't think shooting crows is illegal. It's not like they're an endangered species. Firing a BB gun or .22 in city limits, however, probably is. Poisoning them might be illegal, however, because of the danger to other animals -- such as a cat who might eat a poisoned crow.

Since crows are considered a bird of prey, and raptors are protected under federal law, it's usually illegal to shoot them. However, there's often a clause in the regulations which basically states that you are allowed to destroy them if they are committing or about to commit damage.

And when was the last time you saw a crow that wasn't committing or about to commit damage?

And you like the sparrows? English sparrows? Evil bastards...

You're the music guy, Keith. What kind of music do crows not like?
